The U.S. Center for SafeSport is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to making athlete well-being the centerpiece of the nation's sports culture through abuse prevention education and accountability. Established in 2017 and federally authorized by Congress, the Center is headquartered in Denver, Colorado. Its core business involves preventing and responding to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse and misconduct within the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement.
The Center serves as the exclusive authority for receiving, investigating, and resolving reports of sexual abuse and misconduct within the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement. Key services include providing extensive education and training programs, such as the SafeSport Trained Core course and Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP), for athletes, coaches, parents, and organizations. Additionally, it maintains a public Centralized Disciplinary Database of individuals sanctioned from participation in sport and conducts compliance audits of National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC).
In recent leadership changes, April Holmes is serving as interim CEO, following the departure of Ju'Riese Colón in April 2025. The organization has faced scrutiny, including a recent lawsuit filed in April 2026 by Paralympic gold medalist Robert Griswold, who alleges unlawful practices and reputational damage after receiving a lifetime ban. Despite these challenges, the Center continues to implement process improvements aimed at increasing efficiency, information sharing, and trauma sensitivity, reinforcing its commitment to its mission as the federally authorized body for athlete safeguarding.
