Intermountain Health is a private, not-for-profit healthcare system headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. Its core mission is to help people live the healthiest lives possible, providing a comprehensive range of medical services across the Intermountain West. The organization was founded on April 1, 1975, after the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated fifteen hospitals to form the system.
The system operates approximately 33 to 34 hospitals and 385 to 400+ clinics, offering diverse medical services including cancer care, heart health, women's and orthopedic services, diagnostics, and surgical procedures. Intermountain Health also includes SelectHealth, a health plans division serving over one million members, and provides home healthcare and telehealth services. Its market segments primarily cover Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Kansas, and Wyoming.
Led by President and CEO Rob Allen, Intermountain Health officially changed its name from Intermountain Healthcare in January 2023, reflecting an increased emphasis on preventive health. The organization expanded significantly through its merger with Colorado-based SCL Health in April 2022. In May 2024, it was recognized as the best large healthcare system in the country by Fortune Magazine and PINC AI, and for the second consecutive year, achieved the highest designation (Level 10) in CHIME's 2023 Digital Health Most Wired survey. The system is actively focused on digital health initiatives, interoperability, AI-driven analytics, and patient engagement, while also bringing various service lines in-house to enhance efficiency and reduce overhead.
