Childrens Hospital Los Angeles
Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution dedicated to pediatric healthcare, research, and medical education, headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1901, its mission is to "create hope and build healthier futures" for children. The hospital serves as a leading academic medical center, academically affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California since 1932.
CHLA provides comprehensive pediatric specialties and subspecialties to infants, children, teens, and young adults, typically up to age 21. The institution offers over 350 specialized programs and services, including inpatient and outpatient care, surgical interventions, and treatment for complex conditions such as bone marrow transplants. It is home to The Saban Research Institute, one of the largest pediatric research centers in the Western United States, which conducts extensive laboratory, clinical, and translational research. Annually, CHLA serves over half a million patients and is committed to providing care regardless of a family's socioeconomic status or insurance coverage.
Led by President and CEO Paul S. Viviano since 2015, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles consistently ranks among the top pediatric hospitals nationally by U.S. News & World Report and is frequently recognized as the top children's hospital in California, earning a place on the Honor Roll of Best Children's Hospitals. The hospital recently celebrated its 125th anniversary in April 2026. In notable recent news, CHLA initially paused and subsequently lifted its pause on hormonal therapy and surgeries for transgender youth in 2025, navigating federal policy pressures and state budget considerations.
