Northern Illinois Food Bank Unveils 2026 Events to Combat Rising Hunger

GENEVA, Ill. – January 26, 2026 – Confronted by a persistent and deepening food insecurity crisis across the region, the Northern Illinois Food Bank today announced its lineup of five signature fundraising events for 2026. The series of events, ranging from athletic tournaments to elegant galas, is designed to rally community support and generate critical funds for the millions of meals required annually to support neighbors in need across 13 counties.

These initiatives arrive at a crucial time. The combination of sustained high prices for basic necessities and the expiration of pandemic-era federal aid programs has left a growing number of families struggling to make ends meet. The Food Bank's events represent a strategic effort to engage individuals, families, and corporate partners in the fight against hunger.

A Deepening Crisis Across the Suburbs

The call for support is backed by stark data illustrating the scale of the challenge. Recent studies indicate that food insecurity in Illinois remains stubbornly high, with one in four individuals in the greater Chicagoland area facing hunger. Statewide, nearly 16% of children live in food-insecure households, a figure that has climbed in recent years.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank's direct service area, which spans from suburban Chicago to the Wisconsin border, includes counties with some of the highest need. In Winnebago County, the food insecurity rate stands at 15.8%, while DeKalb and Kankakee counties both hover around 13.5%. Even in more affluent areas like DuPage County, the rate is 9.2%, representing over 85,000 residents who struggle to access consistent, nutritious meals. In total, the organization estimates that 400,000 people, including 100,000 children, face hunger within its territory.

This increased demand places immense pressure on the charitable food system. A survey conducted in late 2022 with Northern Illinois University revealed that while beneficiaries were overwhelmingly grateful for the support, nearly half found it difficult to acquire free food, and a similar percentage wished for a greater variety of items, particularly fresh meat and produce. The funds raised from the 2026 events are aimed directly at bridging these gaps and enhancing the quality and accessibility of food distribution.

From Courts to Cuisine: A Strategy of Diverse Engagement

Recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach is insufficient, the Food Bank has curated a calendar of events designed to appeal to a wide array of community interests. This innovative strategy aims to engage new demographics and create multiple entry points for philanthropy.

The season kicks off on February 1 with the Smash Hunger Classic Pickleball Tournament at The Picklr in Wheaton. Capitalizing on the sport's booming popularity, the event offers both competitive and recreational brackets, inviting players of all skill levels to participate in a high-energy day for a good cause.

On March 1, the focus shifts to an elegant afternoon with A Cup of Hope, presented by Cultivate Power. Hosted by the Executive Women's Council at Abbington Banquets in Glen Ellyn, the high tea will be emceed by ABC7 Chicago news anchor Judy Hsu and feature a performance by the Lake Forest Civic Orchestra, bringing together community and business leaders to raise funds and awareness.

Spring brings two of the organization's largest events. The Fight Hunger 10K, 5K & 1-Mile, presented by ALDI, will take place on May 2 at Wheaton's scenic Cantigny Park. This family-friendly race day includes a Kid's Zone and festival atmosphere. Later that month, on May 20, culinary enthusiasts will gather for A Taste That Matters at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. The premier tasting event, presented by Jewel-Osco, showcases top local chefs and restaurants, offering a unique dining experience in support of hunger relief.

Finally, the season concludes on August 17 with the Hunger Scramble Golf Outing & Smash Hunger Classic Pickleball Tournament, presented by Old Second National Bank. Held at the White Eagle Golf Club in Naperville, the event allows corporate groups and individuals to enjoy a day of friendly competition, networking, and philanthropy.
