More Than a Beer: Samuel Adams’ Mentorship Brews Success for Brewers
BOSTON, MA – March 03, 2026 – As the American craft beer landscape navigates one of its most challenging periods in recent history, Samuel Adams is doubling down on its commitment to small brewers. The iconic Boston-based company has officially opened applications for its 15th annual Brewing & Business Experienceship, a cornerstone of its philanthropic Brewing the American Dream® (BTAD) program, offering a critical lifeline to emerging entrepreneurs in a saturated market.
Brewing Success in a Challenging Market
The call for applications arrives at a pivotal moment for the industry. For the first time in nearly two decades, more U.S. craft breweries closed than opened in 2024, a trend that analysts expect to continue. With overall craft production volume declining and competition from spirits and ready-to-drink beverages intensifying, small breweries face a formidable array of obstacles. These include soaring operational and ingredient costs, complex supply chains, and significant hurdles in securing distribution.
In this high-pressure environment, access to capital and expert guidance is more valuable than ever. The Brewing & Business Experienceship is designed to provide exactly that, offering one standout brewer comprehensive, hands-on mentorship from the team that helped pioneer the craft movement. The program provides an immersive experience covering everything from business planning and marketing to technical brewing and quality control, tailored to the winner's specific needs.
Inspired by the early struggles of Samuel Adams founder Jim Koch, who faced repeated rejections from banks when starting his own brewery, the program aims to dismantle the very barriers he encountered. It functions as an accelerator for a single promising brewery each year, providing the resources and industry access needed to scale and thrive.
The Craft of Mentorship: A Hands-On Approach
The Experienceship is far more than a simple grant or a one-off consultation. Its unique value lies in its deeply collaborative and personal nature. Winners receive extended coaching from a host of experts within The Boston Beer Company, covering everything from supply chain management and sales strategy to legal and regulatory compliance.
"The Brewing & Business Experienceship was built to help level the playing field for emerging brewers by providing access to mentorship, resources, and industry expertise,” said Jennifer Glanville Love, Director of Partnerships & Collaborations at Boston Beer Company. “As we open applications for the 15th year of the program, we’re excited to continue supporting the next generation of brewers and welcoming new founders into the Brewing the American Dream® family.”
A highlight of the program is the opportunity for the winning brewer to travel to the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery to create a limited-edition collaboration beer. This not only provides an invaluable learning experience but also offers a significant marketing and distribution boost. The most recent collaboration, an Apricot Altbier from 2025 winner Moor’s Brewing, was released in Boston and Chicago taprooms to coincide with Black History Month, demonstrating the program’s ability to amplify unique voices and brewing traditions.
This long-term support network includes a growing alumni base of past winners, such as Chula Vista Brewery and Hopkinsville Brewing Company, who have leveraged the experience to navigate expansions, economic downturns, and the day-to-day challenges of running a small business. The connections forged during the Experienceship often last for years, providing a lasting support system in a competitive field.
Beyond the Pint: A Legacy of Entrepreneurial Support
The Experienceship is the flagship initiative of the much broader Brewing the American Dream® program, a large-scale philanthropic effort that has been a cornerstone of Samuel Adams' identity since 2008. In partnership with nonprofit lenders like Accion Opportunity Fund, BTAD has provided crucial support to food and beverage entrepreneurs who are often overlooked by traditional financial institutions.
The program's impact is substantial. To date, it has facilitated nearly 4,500 loans totaling approximately $121 million to small businesses across 41 states. Beyond capital, the program has delivered essential business coaching and advice to nearly 17,000 entrepreneurs through speed coaching events, webinars, and personalized mentoring. The ripple effect on local economies is significant, with businesses supported by the program having created or retained almost 12,200 jobs.
This sustained commitment to small business development showcases a corporate philosophy that extends beyond its own bottom line. It positions Samuel Adams not merely as a competitor in the craft beer space, but as a foundational builder of the entire entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Leveling the Lagers: Fostering a More Inclusive Industry
A defining feature of the Brewing the American Dream program is its profound impact on fostering diversity and inclusion. In an industry that has historically struggled with representation, the program has intentionally focused on supporting underrepresented entrepreneurs. An impressive 76% of the businesses supported by the BTAD network are BIPOC-owned, and 63% are female-owned.
By actively lowering barriers to entry, the Experienceship and the broader BTAD program are helping to reshape the face of craft brewing, ensuring that the people brewing the beer more closely reflect the people drinking it. This commitment is echoed by other industry bodies, like the Brewers Association, which also runs mentorship and grant programs aimed at increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Together, these initiatives signal a concerted effort to build a more equitable and resilient industry.
As the search for the 15th Experienceship winner begins, brewery founders across the country have until March 20, 2026, to submit their applications. Finalists will be invited to the annual Crafting Dreams Beer Bash in New York City, where they will present their beers and business plans to Samuel Adams executives, media, and the public, vying for a chance to become the next success story in this industry-shaping program.
