LOUISVILLE, KY – April 21, 2026 – Michter's Distillery, a name synonymous with uncompromising quality in American whiskey, has announced a highly anticipated addition to its celebrated portfolio. This May, the Kentucky-based producer will release its US★1 Barrel Strength Sour Mash Kentucky Whiskey for the very first time, offering enthusiasts a powerful, uncut version of one of its most storied expressions.
This release marks a significant moment for the distillery, bridging its modern acclaim with its historical roots. The new offering will be bottled at an average proof of 111.5 (55.75% ABV) with a suggested retail price of $120 per 750ml bottle in the United States.
"When Michter's was being produced in the 1970's and the 1980's, the then-Pennsylvania distillery's most popular whiskey was its Sour Mash," said Michter's President Joseph J. Magliocco. "The Michter's US★1 Sour Mash that we make in Kentucky these days is a wonderful whiskey, and we're excited to have this opportunity to share it at barrel strength."
A Rich History, Reimagined
The Sour Mash expression holds a special place in the Michter's lineage. Long before the brand became a fixture in Louisville's modern whiskey scene, its predecessor in Pennsylvania was known for a sour mash whiskey that stood apart. Its unique grain bill didn't qualify it as a bourbon or a rye, so it was simply, and famously, called "Sour Mash." The modern US★1 Sour Mash, introduced in 2012, revived this tradition and has since carved out its own legacy.
In 2019, the standard 86-proof version achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first American whiskey ever to be named "Whisky of the Year" by the influential London-based retailer, The Whisky Exchange. This new barrel-strength release builds directly on that award-winning profile, promising a more intense and unadulterated experience.

"In the spirit of keeping with the consistency and beauty and elegance of this product, we decided to offer this whiskey in a barrel strength form wherein the batch is created, but is left uncut and then undergoes our signature filtration protocol."
