- 81% of sport programmers report increased operational costs, while 62% of organizations see a drop in sign-ups due to affordability.
Experts agree that financial barriers are the primary obstacle to youth sports participation in Canada, and initiatives like KidSport's MOVE430 Challenge are critical in addressing this inequity through community-driven fundraising and support.
KidSport's MOVE430 Challenge Expands to Fight Youth Sports Inequality
WINNIPEG, MB – March 04, 2026 – As the snow melts and spring approaches, KidSport Canada is calling on Canadians to get active for a cause with the return of its annual MOVE430 Challenge, kicking off April 1st. The sixth iteration of the virtual fundraiser is expanding its reach across the country, challenging participants to move for 30 minutes a day for 30 days to help combat the growing financial crisis keeping children on the sidelines.
What began as a local pilot has blossomed into a national movement, now spanning six provinces and aiming to channel the power of community fitness into tangible opportunities for kids who would otherwise miss out on the benefits of organized sport.
Leveling an Uneven Playing Field
The need for initiatives like MOVE430 has never been more critical. Across Canada, financial barriers are the single largest obstacle preventing children from participating in sports. Recent studies reveal a stark reality: for as many as one in two Canadian children, the cost of registration fees, equipment, and travel makes joining a team an impossibility. This issue has been exacerbated by a post-pandemic economic landscape where rising inflation and the high cost of living have put immense pressure on household budgets.
The financial strain is felt by families and sports organizations alike. While 81% of sport programmers report increased operational costs, 62% of organizations have seen a drop in sign-ups directly linked to affordability. For sports like hockey, where costs can soar to over $10,000 per season for a competitive team, participation has dwindled. The consequences extend beyond the rink or field; studies link non-participation to reduced physical fitness, anxiety, and feelings of social exclusion among children.
KidSport Canada stands in this gap. In 2024 alone, the organization's network of 176 local and provincial chapters distributed over $15 million in grants, helping 48,145 children get into the game. Provincial chapters like KidSport BC and KidSport Alberta reported record-breaking years, funding over 10,000 and 20,000 children respectively, a testament to both the escalating need and the organization's growing capacity to respond. The MOVE430 Challenge is a cornerstone of this effort, turning individual wellness goals into collective action.
From Local Pilot to National Movement
The MOVE430 Challenge's growth trajectory showcases a powerful model for modern, virtual fundraising. The event was first piloted by the KidSport Langley chapter in 2021, where it engaged over 250 participants and raised more than $8,000. Its success led to a province-wide expansion in British Columbia the following year, raising over $21,000 for 25 different chapters.
For 2026, the challenge is making its most significant leap yet, expanding to include chapters in Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Alberta, and Quebec. This national rollout reflects the scalability and appeal of a virtual event that lowers logistical barriers and broadens reach, allowing anyone, anywhere in the participating provinces, to contribute.
"Let's get moving Canada! The MOVE430 Challenge is back and bigger than ever this year," says KidSport Canada CEO, Greg Ingalls. "By participating you will support your local KidSport chapter to help us meet the growing demand we are seeing across Canada. You can join the challenge as an individual or get your friends and family together to participate as a team. What a great way to commit to your own health and support KidSport in your community."
This virtual model allows the organization to focus resources on its core mission rather than on the heavy logistics and costs of large-scale physical events, a strategy increasingly adopted by non-profits in the digital age.
How the Challenge Works: Health, Community, and Prizes
Participation is simple and designed to be inclusive. For a $30 registration fee, which goes directly to a KidSport chapter of the participant's choice, individuals commit to 30 minutes of any physical activity each day throughout April. Participants log their daily movement in an online tracker, fostering a sense of accountability and collective progress.
Beyond the registration fee, participants are encouraged to fundraise by soliciting pledges from friends, family, and colleagues, amplifying their impact. To sweeten the deal, KidSport and its partners have assembled an impressive prize pool. Those who complete and log their activity for all 30 days are entered to win prizes donated by Under Armour, including $25 daily gift cards, $250 weekly gift cards, and a grand prize of a $1,000 gift card. An early bird incentive offers registrants who sign up before March 15 a chance to win a $500 Door Dash gift card.
The challenge's dual benefit is its core strength: it provides a structured, motivating goal for individuals to improve their own physical and mental well-being while directly contributing to the well-being of children in their own neighborhoods.
The Power of Partnership: Corporate Support Fuels Impact
The success of KidSport and the MOVE430 Challenge is significantly bolstered by a network of dedicated corporate partners whose contributions go far beyond prize donations. Under Armour, a major national partner since 2022, exemplifies this deep level of commitment. The partnership has already raised over $730,000, helping more than 2,400 children, with a long-term goal of funding 5,000 kids by 2025.
This collaboration extends to targeted, practical support. In Alberta, for example, Under Armour offers a 40% discount on sports bras and sport hijabs for girls receiving KidSport funding. This initiative directly addresses specific, often overlooked, barriers that prevent girls from participating, demonstrating a nuanced understanding of corporate social responsibility.
KidSport's network of support is broad, also including multi-year, high-impact partnerships with companies like Source for Sports®, Saputo, and the Seaman Hotchkiss Hockey Foundation, alongside strategic funding from the Government of Canada. This robust backing enables the organization to pursue ambitious goals, such as raising $20 million annually to help over 66,000 children by 2028.
As registration for the 2026 MOVE430 Challenge is now open, Canadians have a unique opportunity to join this powerful convergence of personal health, community spirit, and corporate partnership. Each 30-minute walk, run, or workout in April represents another step toward ensuring that every child has the chance to experience the joy and camaraderie of sport.
Registration closes on April 1st. For more details or to sign up, participants can visit kidsportcanada.ca/move430 and follow @move430challenge on Instagram for the latest updates.
