The report, titled "Ahead of the Curve," draws on over 94,000 responses from students, faculty, and staff, revealing a community grappling with a technology that is simultaneously embraced as an essential tool and feared for its potential to disrupt careers and compromise academic values.

More than half of students, six in 10 faculty, and two-thirds of staff report using AI-powered tools regularly. A substantial majority believe AI is the future, with 82% of staff, 78% of faculty, and 69% of students agreeing that it will become an essential part of most professions. This belief aligns with forecasts from organizations like the World Economic Forum, which predicts AI will transform 86% of businesses by 2030.
However, this forward-looking optimism is paired with widespread fear. An almost identical number of respondents—82% of students, 78% of faculty, and 74% of staff—expressed concern about AI's impact on job security. This anxiety reflects a global conversation about job displacement and the rapid evolution of required skills, where roles are not just being eliminated but fundamentally redesigned. Industry reports from firms like PwC suggest that while AI will create new jobs, it will also trigger massive job redesigns, placing a premium on adaptability and uniquely human skills like creativity and critical thinking.
"This survey captures a moment of transition in higher education, where both students and faculty are actively assessing how AI fits into teaching and learning," noted David Goldberg, an SDSU AI Faculty Fellow and lead researcher on the survey.
Drawing Ethical Lines and Demanding Guidance
Amid the rapid adoption, the CSU community is proactively establishing ethical boundaries. The survey reveals a strong moral compass, particularly among students. A decisive 80% of student respondents reported they are not comfortable submitting AI-generated work as their own, pushing back against the narrative that students are using the technology primarily to cheat.
Furthermore, a majority of all respondent groups—students, faculty, and staff—insist on the importance of verifying the accuracy of AI-generated content, signaling a healthy skepticism and an understanding of the technology's limitations.
This ethical clarity is accompanied by a powerful demand for formal training and institutional guidance. The call is loudest from employees, with over 80% of staff and 70% of faculty wanting formal AI training. Students are also seeking direction, with about half expressing interest. Notably, the desire is strongest among first-generation students (53%) compared to their non-first-generation peers (45%), highlighting an equity dimension where those who may benefit most from the technology are also the most eager for support in using it correctly.
Faculty are not waiting for top-down mandates. Two-thirds already include an explicit statement on AI use in their syllabi, and 69% are providing students with guidance on how to use the tools effectively and ethically. More than half are also using AI themselves to develop course materials, demonstrating a proactive effort to integrate the technology into their pedagogy.
Preparing the AI-Powered Workforce
The survey's findings are a direct input into CSU's broader strategy to prepare its nearly half-million students for a transformed economy. In early 2025, the system launched CSU AI Commons, an initiative providing free access to AI tools and resources. Since then, over 4,300 faculty members have completed voluntary professional development focused on ethical AI use, equity, and academic integrity.
This approach mirrors strategies being deployed at other major university systems. The State University of New York (SUNY), for example, is taking a similar proactive stance by mandating that all undergraduate students study the ethical dimensions of AI starting in fall 2026.
