Australia's Skies Set for Electric Revolution with New Air Mobility Pact

Australia's major eastern states are poised for a transportation revolution as a powerful new consortium has announced plans to launch electric air taxi services across New South Wales and Queensland. The strategic collaboration brings together three global leaders in the burgeoning Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector: electric aircraft developer Eve Air Mobility, local operator Alt Air, and vertiport infrastructure specialist Skyports Infrastructure.

The partnership aims to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, promising a future of quieter, faster, and more sustainable urban and regional travel. The ambitious plan leverages the upcoming Western Sydney International Airport and the Brisbane 2032 Summer Games as key catalysts to accelerate the rollout of this next-generation transport network.

A Trifecta of Expertise

The success of this groundbreaking venture hinges on the unique capabilities each partner brings to the table. Eve Air Mobility, a spin-off from Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer, is at the forefront of eVTOL design and manufacturing. The company recently achieved a major milestone in December 2025 with the first flight of its full-scale uncrewed prototype, a critical step on its path toward certification with aviation authorities in Brazil and the United States, which it targets for 2027.

Providing the crucial operational expertise is Alt Air, a new Sydney-based company founded by the experienced team behind Sydney Seaplanes. With nearly two decades of experience in one of the world's most complex urban aviation environments, Alt Air will leverage its existing infrastructure, including approved operating bases on Sydney Harbour and at Palm Beach, to fast-track the introduction of eVTOL services.

Completing the trifecta is Skyports Infrastructure, a global leader in designing, building, and operating the vertiports that will serve as the hubs for these electric air taxis. Skyports has a proven track record, having developed the world's first vertiport prototype in Singapore in 2019 and is currently developing networks in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Paris. Their entry into Australia was solidified through an earlier partnership with Wagner Corporation to explore vertiport sites in Queensland, making them a natural fit for this large-scale rollout.

The 2032 Olympic Launchpad

A major focal point of the collaboration is the Brisbane 2032 Summer Games. The partners see the global event not just as a deadline, but as a unique opportunity to showcase a fully operational, high-visibility air mobility network to the world. The goal is to create a lasting legacy of sustainable transport infrastructure that extends far beyond the Games.

"South East Queensland is one of the most attractive markets for AAM to launch in Australia and the Brisbane 2032 Games will be a strong catalyst to enable a safe, efficient and legacy network that will extend well beyond the Games," commented Yun-Yuan Tay, head of Asia-Pacific at Skyports Infrastructure.

The plan involves establishing a network of vertiports connecting key Games venues, major airports including Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast, and central business districts. This network would offer athletes, officials, and spectators a futuristic, efficient, and low-emission travel option, drastically cutting travel times between key locations and alleviating pressure on ground transportation. The consortium is already assessing priority routes to link major population centers, commercial districts, and tourism hubs across both Sydney and South East Queensland.

Building the 'Air-Ways' of the Future

While the vision is compelling, building an entirely new mode of transportation from the ground up presents significant logistical and regulatory challenges. The consortium's integrated operational plan addresses these head-on, covering everything from route planning and airspace integration to ground operations and customer experience.

Skyports will lead the charge on the ground, evaluating and developing vertiport locations that can be seamlessly integrated into existing transport networks. This includes creating multimodal hubs where passengers can easily transition between eVTOLs, trains, and other forms of transport. However, the ambitious construction timeline faces potential headwinds, including a projected shortage of construction labor in Queensland as the state ramps up its preparations for the Olympics.

In the air, the challenge lies in safely integrating hundreds of new, low-altitude aircraft into already busy skies. The partners will work closely with Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) to develop the necessary air traffic management solutions and regulatory frameworks. The presence of other AAM players, such as Wisk Aero, which also has a partnership with Skyports in the region, highlights the growing competition and the pressing need for a unified approach to airspace management.

Early route concepts focus on high-demand corridors where eVTOLs can offer the most significant time savings, such as connecting the new Western Sydney International Airport to downtown Sydney—a journey that can be arduous by car. By turning a 90-minute road trip into a short flight, the service aims to redefine urban connectivity for residents, business travelers, and tourists, positioning Australia at the vanguard of the global urban air mobility revolution.
