The Linux Foundation is a non-profit technology trade association dedicated to fostering the growth and sustainability of open-source ecosystems. Established in 2000, its core mission is to promote, protect, and standardize Linux and other open-source software and technologies. The organization serves as a neutral, trusted hub, providing financial and intellectual resources, infrastructure, events, and training to facilitate open innovation and collaborative development. Its primary operational headquarters are located in San Francisco, California.

The Foundation offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to support open-source projects from inception to widespread adoption. These services include developer enablement, business operations, training and certification programs, marketing, and event management. It provides a neutral home for code and collaboration, curates ecosystems, and offers project insights and management tools. The Linux Foundation supports a diverse array of open-source initiatives beyond the Linux kernel, encompassing critical areas such as cloud computing (e.g., Kubernetes via the Cloud Native Computing Foundation), networking, blockchain (e.g., Hyperledger, LF Decentralized Trust), hardware, standards development, and data projects.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Jim Zemlin and Board Chair Nithya Ruff, The Linux Foundation maintains a prominent position as the world's largest non-profit open-source organization, boasting over 1,000 corporate members. Recent initiatives include the June 2026 launch of "Akrites," a collaborative effort to enhance the reporting, remediation, and disclosure of vulnerabilities in critical open-source software through a shared Security Incident Response Team. Additionally, in June 2026, the Foundation announced plans for an "Agent Name Service" (ANS), an open standard built on DNS infrastructure to verify AI agents across the internet, addressing the growing need for trusted identity in agentic AI.
