The GSM Association
The GSMA is a global industry organization that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, uniting over 750 mobile operators as full members and an additional 400 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem as associate members. Headquartered in London, England, UK, its core mission is to unlock the full potential of connectivity so that people, industry, and society can thrive. The association achieves this by creating a positive business environment through regulatory advocacy and enabling societal change via ubiquitous connectivity and industry-wide innovation platforms.
The GSMA's key activities include global advocacy and lobbying, particularly concerning radio spectrum allocation and telecom regulatory policy, as well as technical standardization for mobile technologies from GSM to 5G and beyond. It also serves as a major industry convener through its flagship Mobile World Congress (MWC) event series. The organization manages programs such as 'Future Networks,' 'Identity,' and the 'Internet of Things,' and is the global administrator of Type Allocation Code (TAC) and International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers. Through GSMA Services and GSMA Intelligence, it provides data, resources, and tools to assist the mobile industry, covering market segments from mobile operators and device makers to software companies and organizations in adjacent sectors like financial services and healthcare.
Currently, the GSMA is governed by a 26-member Board of Directors, primarily comprising CEOs and senior executives from leading mobile operators, with José María Álvarez-Pallete López (CEO of Telefónica Group) re-elected as Board Chair through 2026. Recent initiatives and market positioning highlight a focus on 5G momentum, artificial intelligence (AI), telco security, the GSMA Open Gateway, and digital inclusion. The association also explores trends in consumer devices, smart homes, digital entertainment, and automotive, and identifies significant enterprise technology opportunities, emphasizing the need for operators to transform their delivery models to capture a share of the growing non-telco IT services market.
