Spelman College
Spelman College is a private, historically Black liberal arts college for women, located in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1881, its mission is to be a global leader in the education of women of African descent, dedicated to academic excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, and the intellectual, creative, ethical, and leadership development of its students. The institution aims to empower the whole person to engage diverse cultures and inspire a commitment to positive social change.
The college offers baccalaureate degrees across 36 distinct undergraduate degrees, encompassing 31 majors within 18 broad fields of study, and 39 minors. Academic programs are strong in the arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and sciences. Spelman also provides special programs such as continuing education, summer science initiatives, and dual degrees in engineering. It serves a diverse student body of over 2,100 women from 43 states and 10 foreign countries.
Spelman College holds a prominent position in higher education, consistently ranked as the #1 Historically Black College or University (HBCU) by U.S. News & World Report for 19 consecutive years, and is also recognized among the top National Liberal Arts institutions. The college is highly selective, with an acceptance rate typically ranging from 25% to 28%. Rosalind "Roz" Brewer, C'84, currently serves as the Interim President and Chair Emerita, as the institution conducts a search for its 12th president. Recent initiatives include the launch of a historic $500 million "Spelman Forward" comprehensive campaign.
