Scripps Health
Scripps Health is a private, non-profit integrated health care delivery system based in San Diego, California. Founded in 1924 by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps, its mission is to deliver quality, safe, cost-effective, and socially responsible healthcare, making a measurable difference in the health of the San Diego community. The organization is also committed to advancing clinical research, community health education, and graduate medical education.
Scripps Health operates five acute-care hospital campuses, approximately 30 outpatient centers and clinics, hospice and home health care services, and numerous affiliated physician offices throughout San Diego County. It offers a comprehensive range of medical and surgical specialties, including cardiology, cancer care, orthopedics, neurology, stroke, spine, trauma, organ and cell transplantation, and genomic medicine, serving over 700,000 patients annually.
Led by President and CEO Chris Van Gorder since 2000, Scripps Health continues to expand and innovate. In April 2026, philanthropists Ernest and Evelyn Rady donated $75 million to the North Tower at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, which opened in June 2025 and will be renamed the Rady Tower. The system is also developing a new $1.2 billion medical campus in San Marcos, which will include an ambulatory care facility and an acute-care hospital. Scripps Health maintains a strong market position as the second-largest healthcare provider in San Diego County, with leading shares in several specialty service lines, and has received an 'AA' rating with a Stable Outlook from Fitch Ratings in December 2025, reflecting its improved financial performance.
