Research Triangle Institute (RTI International)
RTI International, operating under its legal name Research Triangle Institute, is an independent, non-profit research organization dedicated to improving the human condition by translating knowledge into practical solutions. Established in 1958, its headquarters are located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA.
The institute provides a wide array of research and technical services to governments, businesses, foundations, and universities globally. Its expertise spans social, statistical, data, and laboratory sciences, engineering, and international development. Key areas of focus include health and pharmaceuticals, advanced technology, surveys and statistics, education and training, economic and social development, energy, and environmental sciences. RTI also operates RTI Health Solutions, a separate business serving commercial clients.
Led by President and CEO Tim J. Gabel, RTI International reported revenues of $1.2 billion in 2023 and employs nearly 6,000 individuals across more than 75 countries. The organization is a significant recipient of federal government grants, having received $4.2 billion under the Biden administration. Recent activities include contributions to national trials on opioid withdrawal, being recognized on USA TODAY's America's Climate Leaders 2026 list, and studies on Medicaid patients receiving opioid use disorder treatment. In February 2025, RTI International announced temporary layoffs for 226 employees across the United States.
