Penney OpCo LLC (JCPenney)
JCPenney, legally known as Penney OpCo LLC, is an American department store chain founded in 1902 by James Cash Penney. Headquartered in Plano, Texas, the company's core business is to serve value-conscious families by offering a broad department-store mix that emphasizes practical value, wide choice, and convenient shopping.
The retailer provides a diverse range of products and services, including clothing, footwear, accessories, jewelry, beauty products, home furnishings, and salon services. JCPenney features both national brands and its own private labels such as Liz Claiborne®, Stafford®, Arizona Jean Co.®, and St. John's Bay®. Its primary market segment consists of American working families, particularly women aged 35-55, with household incomes typically ranging from $50,000 to $100,000.
After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020, JCPenney emerged as a private company in December 2020 under the ownership of Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management. In January 2025, JCPenney merged with SPARC Group to form Catalyst Brands, which is now its parent company. The company is currently implementing a multiyear, self-funded $1.1 billion reinvestment plan, dubbed "Make It Count," aimed at modernizing stores, refining merchandising, and enhancing digital capabilities by 2025. Marc Rosen, formerly JCPenney's CEO, leads Catalyst Brands.
