Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan) is a federal agency of the Government of Canada, established on August 6, 2021, with the core mission of promoting economic growth and diversification within British Columbia. Headquartered in Surrey, British Columbia, the agency aims to enhance innovation, improve business competitiveness, promote the adoption of clean technologies, and foster inclusive economic growth across the province.
PacifiCan operates as an investor, advisor, pathfinder, and convenor, administering various grants and contributions programs to provide direct support to businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and communities. Its services are designed to help these entities grow stronger, overcome challenges, and seize opportunities, with a focus on diverse market segments including Indigenous groups, women-led businesses, academic institutions, municipalities, business accelerators, and incubators. Key funding programs include Business Scale-up and Productivity, the Regional Tariff Response Initiative, and Community Economic Development and Diversification.
Since its establishment, PacifiCan has expanded its regional presence with offices across British Columbia, including Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Prince George, Cranbrook, Fort St. John, Prince Rupert, and Campbell River, alongside a liaison office in Ottawa. Naina Sloan assumed the role of President on January 17, 2025, and The Honourable Gregor Robertson serves as the Minister responsible for the agency. Recent activities include significant investments in AI and aerospace innovation, as well as initiatives to strengthen business growth and defence innovation within British Columbia.
