The OpenSearch Software Foundation is a community-driven initiative operating under the umbrella of The Linux Foundation. Established in September 2024, its core mission is to ensure the long-term sustainability of the OpenSearch open-source project by providing infrastructure and resources. The foundation aims to foster a secure, high-quality, and fully open-source search and analytics suite with a robust roadmap for new functionalities.
The primary offering supported by the foundation is the OpenSearch Project, which develops and maintains OpenSearch, a distributed, Apache 2.0-licensed search and analytics suite. This suite includes the OpenSearch search engine and OpenSearch Dashboards for data visualization, alongside tools like Data Prepper for data ingestion. OpenSearch is utilized across various market segments for use cases such as log analytics, application and enterprise search, data observability, security analytics, and as a vector database for AI-driven applications.
Since its formation, the OpenSearch Software Foundation has seen significant growth and development. In August 2025, it marked its one-year anniversary with a 78% year-over-year increase in project downloads and advancements in Agentic AI and Hybrid Search. Key milestones include the release of OpenSearch 3.0 in May 2025, which enhanced vector database performance and scalability for AI demands, and the launch of a Long-Term Support (LTS) program in April 2026. The foundation has also expanded its membership, welcoming IBM as a Premier Member in November 2025 and CERN as an associate member in April 2026. Leadership includes Carl Meadows as Chair and Bianca Lewis as Executive Director. The project has surpassed 1 billion software downloads as of 2025, solidifying its position as a vendor-neutral, community-driven solution in the search and analytics landscape.
