Office of the Secretary to the Governor General

The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General (OSGG) is a Canadian federal government office dedicated to supporting the Governor General in fulfilling constitutional, State, and ceremonial responsibilities. Its core mission is to serve Canadians and to support the Governor General as the King's representative in Canada. The OSGG's primary headquarters are located at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Ontario, one of the official residences and workplaces of the Governor General.

The OSGG is responsible for planning and implementing the Governor General's programs and activities both domestically and internationally, including engagements with the Canadian Forces as Commander-in-Chief. A key function involves recognizing outstanding achievements and fostering national identity, unity, and pride among Canadians. Through its Chancellery of Honours, the Office administers Canada's Honours System, which includes prestigious awards such as the Order of Canada, Decorations for Bravery, Meritorious Service Decorations, and the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers. Additionally, the OSGG provides public information programs and visitor services at the Governor General's official residences, Rideau Hall and La Citadelle in Quebec City, to educate the public on the role of the Governor General.

Leadership at the OSGG saw Ken MacKillop appointed as Secretary to the Governor General in November 2023, succeeding Ian McCowan. In a notable recent development in June 2026, new guidelines were introduced regarding the Governor General's clothing expenses. These guidelines, announced by Governor General Louise Arbour, explicitly state that casual or business attire cannot be billed to taxpayers, with reimbursements now limited to outfits required for official functions. The OSGG operates with an annual budget approved by Parliament and is publicly accountable for its expenditures.
