Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is an academic medical center and research institution headquartered in New York City, specializing in the treatment of orthopedic and rheumatologic conditions. Founded in 1863, HSS is the oldest orthopedic hospital in the United States. Its mission is to provide the highest quality patient care, improve mobility and enhance the quality of life for all, and to advance the science of orthopedic surgery, rheumatology, and related disciplines through research and education. The institution's main campus is located at 535 East 70th Street in Manhattan.

HSS offers a comprehensive range of services, including joint replacement, orthopedic trauma care, hand and upper extremity surgery, limb lengthening, osseointegration, foot and ankle surgery, pediatric orthopedics, spine surgery, sports medicine, physiatry, rheumatology, and physical therapy. The hospital also maintains a robust research institute with 21 laboratories and 300 staff members, focusing on advancing musculoskeletal health through prevention, tissue repair, and regeneration. HSS provides extensive educational programs, including residency and fellowship opportunities, and extends its care through locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Florida.

Consistently recognized for its excellence, HSS has been ranked No. 1 in orthopedics nationally by U.S. News & World Report for 16 consecutive years (2025-2026) and No. 3 in rheumatology. Newsweek has also ranked HSS as the world's top orthopedic hospital for five consecutive years (2025). In recent leadership changes, Bryan T. Kelly, MD, MBA, became President and CEO in 2023, marking the first time a surgeon has led the institution in its 160-year history. The hospital continues to innovate, as evidenced by its January 2026 partnership with Ema to deploy AI agents for patient scheduling and triage, and the recent opening of the Kellen Tower, completing a major campus expansion.
