European Patent Organisation (European Patent Office, EPO)

The European Patent Office (EPO) serves as the executive body of the European Patent Organisation, an international public organization established in 1977 under the European Patent Convention. Headquartered in Munich, Germany, with additional offices in Rijswijk (The Hague), Berlin, Vienna, and Brussels, its core mission is to foster innovation, competitiveness, and economic growth by delivering high-quality patents and efficient services.

The EPO's primary activity involves the search and examination of European patent applications, leading to the grant of European patents that can provide protection in up to 46 countries. Beyond patent granting, the Office offers comprehensive patent information and training services, including online databases like Espacenet and the European Patent Register. It also plays a crucial role in the international patent system by acting as a Receiving Office, International Searching Authority, and International Preliminary Examining Authority under the Patent Cooperation Treaty.

Under the leadership of President António Campinos, who took office in July 2018, the EPO continues to adapt to the evolving intellectual property landscape. In 2025, the Office recorded over 200,000 European patent applications for the first time, processing a record 418,868 dossiers, reflecting sustained demand and increased productivity. The introduction of the European patent with unitary effect in June 2023 marks a significant development, aiming to simplify patent protection across Europe. The EPO was also recently recognized as the top-rated patent office among the IP5 for the quality of its patents and services.
