Eclipse Foundation Canada is a member-based Canadian not-for-profit organization that forms part of the broader Eclipse Foundation Group, which provides a business-friendly environment for open-source software collaboration and innovation. While the principal entity, Eclipse Foundation AISBL, is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, Eclipse Foundation Canada maintains an office in Ottawa, Ontario. The organization's mission centers on ensuring user freedoms through vendor-neutral governance, empowering developers and their communities, and enabling collaboration across various technology sectors.
The Eclipse Foundation hosts over 400 open-source projects, including the widely recognized Eclipse IDE, Adoptium, Software Defined Vehicle, and Jakarta EE. These projects encompass a diverse range of technology domains such as the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud and edge computing, artificial intelligence (AI), automotive, and systems engineering. The foundation offers key services including intellectual property (IP) management, ecosystem development and marketing, support for development processes, and IT infrastructure to foster a robust open-source ecosystem.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Mike Milinkovich, the Eclipse Foundation continues to be a significant force in the open-source world. Recent initiatives in April 2026 include the launch of the Open VSX Managed Registry and a Security Researcher Recognition Program, aimed at strengthening supply chain security. The foundation is actively involved in advancing open-source solutions for emerging areas like Software Defined Vehicles (SDV) and Open Regulatory Compliance (ORC), reflecting its commitment to driving innovation and collaboration within the global technology landscape.
