Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF)
The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is a non-profit organization established in 2015 as a subsidiary of The Linux Foundation. Its core mission is to make cloud-native computing ubiquitous by fostering and sustaining an ecosystem of open-source, vendor-neutral projects. The CNCF brings together developers, end-users, and vendors to advance the development and adoption of cloud-native technologies. The organization is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States.
CNCF serves as the steward for a diverse portfolio of open-source projects critical to modern infrastructure, categorized into Sandbox, Incubating, and Graduated maturity levels. These projects focus on areas such as container orchestration, microservices, observability, and service meshes. Key projects include Kubernetes (container orchestration), Prometheus (monitoring), Envoy (service proxy), Fluentd (log forwarding), and Helm (package management). Beyond project hosting, CNCF also provides services like training and certification programs, including the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) and Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) certifications.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Jonathan Bryce, the CNCF continues to expand its influence within the technology landscape. Recent reports indicate significant growth in the cloud-native developer community, reaching nearly 20 million developers in Q1 2026, with a notable increase in cloud-native AI developers. The foundation actively promotes innovation, with recent news highlighting advancements like Kubernetes 1.35's focus on AI/ML workload optimization, new features for Istio, and collaborations to enhance software supply chain security. CNCF also organizes major industry events such as KubeCon + CloudNativeCon, which serve as crucial platforms for community collaboration and knowledge sharing.
