Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI)
The Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) is a distinguished higher education and research institution based in Siruseri, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Established in 1989 by the SPIC Science Foundation, CMI operates with a core mission to foster excellence in research and teaching within the mathematical sciences, aiming to evolve into a globally recognized university. It functions as a private science institution, recognized as a deemed university under the UGC Act of 1956, and is governed by a Trust and a Governing Council.
CMI offers a range of academic programs, including Bachelor of Science (Honours), Master of Science, and Ph.D. degrees across Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics. Its research groups are highly regarded in India, focusing on areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, and topology in Mathematics; formal methods, algorithms, and computer security in Computer Science; and quantum field theory, gravitational physics, and string theory in Physics. The institute also engages in collaborative research projects with academic and industrial partners.
In recent leadership changes, Prof. Madhavan Mukund was appointed Director of CMI effective May 1, 2021, succeeding Prof. Rajeeva Karandikar. Ramkumar Ramamoorthy also joined the advisory leadership team as CEO in October 2020. CMI maintains a unique position in Indian academia, attracting significant funding from both private and governmental sources, and is known for its robust research-driven teaching model and strong global outcomes for its graduates.
