The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit research organization dedicated to conducting transportation research with a primary emphasis on the trucking industry's vital role in fostering a safe, efficient, and viable transportation system. Established in 1954, ATRI is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, with additional offices located in Atlanta, Minneapolis, Sacramento, and New York.

ATRI's research encompasses a broad spectrum of critical areas, including congestion and mobility, economic analysis, safety and security, technology and operations, environment, and transportation infrastructure. The institute produces various influential reports and analyses, such as the annual "Top 100 Truck Bottlenecks," "Operational Costs of Trucking," and "Critical Issues in the Trucking Industry." Beyond its publications, ATRI manages the U.S. DOT's Freight Mobility Program and provides technical assistance to numerous state Departments of Transportation and Metropolitan Planning Organizations.

Rebecca Brewster serves as ATRI's President and Chief Operating Officer, with plans to retire in early 2027 after 34 years with the organization. Derek Leathers, CEO of Werner Enterprises, chairs the ATRI Board of Directors. In recent news, ATRI released its 2026 Top Research Priorities and the latest "Top 100 Truck Bottlenecks" report. The institute also published significant research in late 2025 and early 2026 on topics such as cargo theft, trucking litigation, and the operational costs of trucking, and its data was cited in April 2026 regarding the economics of autonomous trucking.
