American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA)

The American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) is a professional organization dedicated to advancing, supporting, and protecting the nurse anesthesiology profession. Founded in 1931, the association serves as the primary representative for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and student registered nurse anesthetists in the United States. Its headquarters are located in Rosemont, Illinois.

AANA provides a comprehensive range of services to its members, including advocacy for policies that support patient access to anesthesia care, continuing education opportunities, and professional development resources. The association also supports research through the AANA Foundation, develops practice standards and guidelines, and fosters a professional community for CRNAs. Additionally, AANA offers members access to various insurance services, such as malpractice, health, dental, life, and disability coverage.

In August 2021, the organization underwent a rebranding, officially changing its name from the "American Association of Nurse Anesthetists" to the "American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology." This change, along with the endorsement of the descriptor "nurse anesthesiologist," has been a notable development, though it has drawn criticism from some physician groups. AANA represents over 62,000 members, constituting approximately 90% of CRNAs nationwide, and celebrated its 95th anniversary in June 2026. The current President for 2025-2026 is Jeffrey Molter, and William "Bill" Bruce serves as the Chief Executive Officer.
