The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is a professional society established in 1948, representing over 40,000 neurologists and neuroscientists globally. Its core mission is to advance the art and science of neurology, promote the highest quality patient-centered neurological care, enhance member career satisfaction, and champion brain health for all. The organization maintains its headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at 201 Chicago Avenue, with an additional health policy office in Washington, D.C..

The AAN provides a comprehensive suite of products and services, including continuing medical education, essential practice tools, and research grants. It publishes several key resources such as its official journal Neurology, Brain&Life magazine, Continuum: Lifelong Learning in Neurology, and Neurology Today. The Academy also hosts an Annual Meeting and Fall Conference, which are significant events for neurologists and neuroscientists worldwide, and offers various leadership development programs, including the Enhanced Resident Leadership Program and Diversity Leadership Program. Under the leadership of President Natalia S. Rost, MD, MPH, FAAN, FAHA, and CEO Mary E. Post, MBA, CAE, the AAN launched a new five-year strategic plan in March 2024. This plan focuses on expanding its mission to grow a diverse neurology workforce, strengthen neurologic practice, promote neuroscience research, and improve overall neurologic health. Recent activities include discussions at the 2026 Annual Meeting on critical challenges facing neurology, such as equitable access to care and advancing preventive brain health. The AAN remains a leading voice in brain health, committed to supporting its members and fostering advancements in the field.
