Alberta Securities Commission
The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the regulatory agency responsible for administering and enforcing the province's securities laws. Its core mission is to foster a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and to protect investors from improper, misleading, or fraudulent practices. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the ASC operates as an independent provincial corporation, funded by fees from market participants and its investment income, and is accountable to the Alberta Minister of Treasury Board and Finance and the Alberta Legislature.
The ASC regulates all securities-related activity within Alberta, either directly or through self-regulatory organizations. Its services encompass setting rules and policies, conducting investigations and enforcement actions, and providing investor education resources. The Commission oversees a broad range of market participants, including public companies, investment funds, dealers, and advisors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), the ASC also plays a role in improving, coordinating, and harmonizing securities regulation across Canada.
Stan Magidson serves as the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the ASC, with Samir Sabharwal appointed as Executive Director in April 2023 and Deanna Steblyk, K.C. as Vice-Chair in March 2026. In May 2026, the ASC announced the creation of a whistleblower program and the Office of the Whistleblower, designed to encourage the reporting of securities law violations with enhanced confidentiality protections. The Commission also issued an interim order against Midas Vantage Projects Lithium Limited in April 2026 and announced a temporary fee coordination approach with the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) in March 2026 to maintain neutral registration costs.
