AAOMS
The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) is a non-profit professional association dedicated to advancing, promoting, and preserving the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. As the surgical arm of dentistry, AAOMS supports the skills and professionalism of its members to ensure patient access to safe and effective care. The organization's headquarters are located in Rosemont, Illinois.
AAOMS provides a comprehensive suite of services for its members, including extensive educational and training opportunities through annual meetings, dental implant conferences, webinars, and hands-on workshops. It also offers valuable resources such as the peer-reviewed Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, AAOMS Today magazine, and various e-newsletters, white papers, and position papers. The association actively engages in advocacy at both state and federal levels to support the specialty and provides practice management resources, coding and billing information, and staff education. A key offering is the Office Anesthesia Evaluation (OAE) program, which ensures high standards for office-based anesthesia. For the public, AAOMS promotes the expertise of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and offers a "Find a Surgeon" tool via MyOMS.org, alongside public awareness campaigns for issues like National Facial Protection Month and Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Through its for-profit subsidiary, AAOMS Services, Inc. (AAOMS Advantage), the organization also facilitates access to financial services, practice efficiency tools, and specialized services like PPO negotiation and stem cell banking for its members.
In recent leadership news, Robert S. Clark, DMD, was introduced as the 2025-26 President of AAOMS in September 2025, succeeding J. David Morrison, DMD, who served as the 2024-2025 president. Karin Wittich, CAE, holds the position of Executive Director and Board Secretary. The association continues to publish significant research in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, covering topics such as the efficacy of Reiki therapy before wisdom tooth removal, the benefits of early removal of extra front teeth in children, and the impact of helmet use on reducing facial injuries. AAOMS remains active in legislative advocacy, addressing insurance bills, federal dental insurance reform, and Medicare payment policies, while its annual meetings and scientific sessions serve as crucial platforms for professional development and networking.
