UNESCO Bets on India: New Hub in GIFT City to Reshape Sustainability

AHMEDABAD, India – July 22, 2026 – In a move signaling a significant shift in global sustainability strategy, the UNESCO MOST BRIDGES Coalition has selected India’s futuristic Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) to host its new South Asia Regional Programme Office. The initiative, to be led by the tech-focused TryfactaEDU Global Foundation, represents more than just a new office; it's a strategic bet on India's capacity to lead and a radical new approach to solving the world's most complex environmental and social challenges.

Set to commence operations in late 2026, the office aims to become a nerve center for sustainability science across one of the world's most climate-vulnerable regions. However, its mission departs sharply from traditional, top-down development models. By choosing a non-profit specializing in technology-enabled education and locating it within a burgeoning financial and tech hub, UNESCO is championing a novel, transdisciplinary blueprint—one that integrates humanities, local knowledge, and cutting-edge technology to create solutions that are not only scientifically sound but also culturally resonant and economically viable.

The establishment of this regional hub is a core component of the BRIDGES Coalition's 2026-2028 strategic roadmap, which seeks to scale “humanities-driven, transdisciplinary sustainability science.” Launched in 2021, BRIDGES operates under UNESCO's Management of Social Transformations (MOST) Programme with a distinct philosophy: that lasting solutions to planetary crises cannot be engineered in a vacuum. They must be co-created by integrating the natural sciences with the humanities, social sciences, arts, and diverse local knowledge systems.

South Asia, home to nearly a quarter of the world's population, presents a critical testbed for this approach. The region faces a cascade of intersecting crises, from extreme water scarcity affecting over 347 million children to rapid, unplanned urbanization and devastating climate impacts that threaten to shrink its collective economy. The new office is designed to be the connective tissue between the global scientific community and the local realities of this complex landscape.

Furthermore, GIFT City's status as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) provides significant financial and regulatory incentives, easing the operational burden for an international non-profit and attracting top talent. The city's burgeoning role as a hub for green finance and digital innovation, including upcoming AI data centers, creates a powerful ecosystem.
