Texas Southern University Earns Rare Dual Honor, Cementing Its Urban Mission

HOUSTON, TX – January 13, 2026 – Texas Southern University has achieved a landmark distinction, earning the prestigious Carnegie Community Engagement Classification. The recognition places TSU in an elite group of American universities and makes it the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Texas to concurrently hold both the Community Engagement Classification and the Carnegie R2 status for “high research activity.”

The Carnegie Classifications are the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education. While the R2 classification is based on metrics like research expenditures and doctoral graduates, the Community Engagement Classification is an elective honor that requires a rigorous self-study and application process. It is awarded only to institutions that can demonstrate a deep, pervasive, and integrated commitment to community collaboration.

Fewer than 10 percent of the nearly 4,000 degree-granting institutions in the United States hold the Community Engagement Classification. TSU’s application showcased a comprehensive portfolio of programs where academic rigor and community benefit are mutually reinforcing. These initiatives are not add-ons but are woven into the fabric of the university’s colleges and departments, directly impacting the Greater Houston area.

In the College of Education, the mission to prepare culturally responsive educators is realized through deep partnerships with local PreK–12 schools, including the Houston Independent School District. TSU students gain invaluable hands-on experience as teacher apprentices, filling critical roles in local classrooms while learning to serve diverse student populations effectively.

Addressing critical health needs, the university has forged impactful collaborations. Faculty in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences contributed expertise to help Mental Health America of Greater Houston develop a vital referral system, connecting residents to mental health services.
