The Sole of a New Machine: A Plastic-Free Outsole Without Compromise
PEORIA, Ill. – April 27, 2026 – Materials science company Natural Fiber Welding (NFW) today announced the commercial launch of PLIANT™ PCS, a natural rubber outsole compound that is 100-percent biobased, non-toxic, and entirely free of plastics. The material, engineered to eliminate the long-standing performance gap between bio-based materials and their petroleum-based counterparts, is being introduced to the global footwear industry at the International Footwear Conference (FXPO) in Vietnam.
For decades, footwear brands have faced a difficult choice: prioritize sustainability with bio-materials that often fall short on durability, or rely on high-performance synthetic rubbers derived from fossil fuels. With growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products and increasing regulatory pressure to decarbonize supply chains, this compromise has become a central challenge for the nearly $400 billion global footwear market. NFW's latest innovation aims to render that tradeoff obsolete.
Closing the Performance Gap
Historically, plant-based outsole materials have struggled to meet the rigorous mechanical demands of modern footwear, limiting their use to niche applications. Issues with abrasion resistance, tear strength, and grip have prevented widespread adoption by brands whose reputations depend on product longevity and safety. PLIANT™ PCS is engineered to directly overcome these hurdles.
NFW reports that the new compound achieves tensile and tear strength exceeding three times the highest requirements found in industry-standard footwear specifications. The company also highlights strong DIN abrasion resistance—a key measure of wear and tear—and outstanding grip performance in both wet and dry conditions, putting it in direct competition with conventional synthetic options.
"The performance data on PLIANT PCS speaks for itself: tensile and tear strength well above industry requirements, grip that competes with synthetic alternatives, and a supply model that fits how brands actually develop and manufacture footwear," said Steve Zika, chief executive officer of Natural Fiber Welding, in today's press release. "We built PLIANT PCS to eliminate the tradeoffs brands have had to accept when considering biobased outsole materials. It delivers on that."
These claims address critical industry benchmarks, such as ISO and EN standards for tear strength and slip resistance, which have traditionally been the domain of synthetic compounds. By meeting or exceeding these metrics, NFW offers a plant-based material that requires no apology or performance excuse.
A Strategic Step Away from Plastic
The environmental implications of this launch are significant. The vast majority of the 24 billion pairs of shoes produced annually use soles made from petrochemical-based materials. A major, often overlooked consequence is the shedding of microplastics. Research has identified shoe sole abrasion as a primary contributor to microplastic pollution, with one German study estimating it to be a leading source, releasing over 100 grams of microplastics per person annually. Because PLIANT™ PCS is completely free of plastics and petrochemicals, it offers a direct solution to this pervasive environmental problem.
NFW's commitment to sustainability extends through the material's entire lifecycle. The company's products are developed under a philosophy it calls "Ground Rules™," focusing on clean sourcing, non-toxic production, and a safe end-of-life. PLIANT™ PCS is USDA-certified as 100% biobased and has been tested against stringent chemical safety standards like REACH SVHC and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100. This ensures that the material is not only derived from renewable resources but is also free from the toxic additives commonly used in synthetic rubber processing. Furthermore, NFW is investing in regenerative agroforestry for its natural rubber feedstock, aiming to create a supply chain that actively benefits ecosystems.
Paving the Way for Market Adoption
While performance and sustainability are crucial, market adoption hinges on economic viability and ease of integration. NFW has addressed this by making PLIANT™ PCS cost-competitive with premium compression-molded rubber offerings and by designing a uniquely flexible supply chain model.
Brands have two pathways to incorporate the material. They can purchase PLIANT™ PCS as a bulk compound for use in their own nominated molding factories, allowing for seamless integration into existing manufacturing relationships. Alternatively, they can source finished, molded outsoles directly through NFW's established production network. This dual-pronged approach significantly lowers the barrier to entry for brands of all sizes, whether they prefer to manage their own production or leverage a turnkey solution.
This strategy appears to be gaining traction. Australian brand Bared Footwear has already debuted a collection featuring PLIANT™ and plans to transition its entire range to the material. Similarly, minimalist footwear pioneer Vivobarefoot recently launched its Gobi II Sneaker with a PLIANT™ outsole, highlighting the material's durability and flexibility as part of its quest for circular, biodegradable footwear. This early adoption by established brands signals strong market confidence in the material's promise.
The launch comes as the wider industry actively seeks such solutions. Collaborations like "The Next Stride," a project involving major players like adidas and Target, are focused on de-risking and scaling bio-based soles to boost circularity. NFW's commercially available, high-performance product arrives as a ready-made answer to this industry-wide call to action.
PLIANT™ PCS is available for sampling and order immediately. Charlie Smith, NFW's Global Sales Manager, is scheduled to speak on the topic at the FXPO conference, further detailing the path forward for brands looking to take a definitive step away from petroleum and plastic. The company's comprehensive approach—tackling performance, sustainability, and supply chain logistics simultaneously—positions this new material as more than just an alternative, but as a potential new standard for the soles that carry us forward.
