Thales Academy Expands to Meet Chatham County's Growth Demand

PITTSBORO, NC – April 09, 2026 – Thales Academy Pittsboro has announced a major expansion to become a full Pre-K through high school campus, a move that directly addresses the explosive population growth in Chatham County. The private school, currently serving students up to 8th grade, will construct two new buildings set to open in 2027, adding a 9th grade for the 2027–2028 school year and phasing in subsequent high school grades annually.

The expansion is a strategic response to the burgeoning demand for educational options driven by the massive Chatham Park planned community. This development positions Thales Academy to offer a continuous educational path from early childhood through graduation, blending a classical curriculum with modern technical training at a notably accessible price point.

The primary engine of this growth is Chatham Park, a master-planned community spanning over 7,000 acres in Pittsboro. Upon completion, the development is projected to house up to 75,000 new residents, a figure that would dramatically reshape the region.

Already, the impact is palpable. Pittsboro's population has surged by 31% in recent years, and Chatham County as a whole is projected to grow by over 2.5% annually. This influx of families, many drawn by the Research Triangle's robust job market, has placed significant pressure on existing public school infrastructure. Projections indicate that new families in Chatham Park could add nearly 3,000 students to local schools over a decade, creating an urgent need for diverse educational capacity.

Thales Academy's expansion is timed to meet this wave of demand head-on. By providing a comprehensive Pre-K through 12th-grade pathway within the Chatham Park community, the school offers a stable, long-term option for families moving into the area.

Pedagogically, the school employs a two-pronged approach. In grades K–5, it uses Direct Instruction, a highly structured, research-based teaching method with scripted lessons and rapid pacing to ensure subject mastery. The construction includes a standalone gymnatorium that will house engineering lab classrooms for the Luddy Institute of Technology (LIT) and Luddy Industrial Arts (LIA) programs.

The LIA program, required for students in grades 6-9, serves as a foundation in practical skills. It introduces students to the engineering design process, woodworking, tool safety, and basic electronics through hands-on, project-based learning. This prepares them for the Luddy Institute of Technology, an optional high school pre-engineering track.

LIT students delve into advanced topics including computer-aided design (CAD) using SolidWorks software, Python programming, 3D printing, and electronics. The sequence culminates in a senior capstone project, where students are given a budget and a full academic year to identify and solve a real-world problem. This emphasis on practical application is designed to cultivate innovation, problem-solving, and resilience, preparing graduates for top engineering schools and STEM careers.

The new academic building for upper grades will feature Thales Academy's distinctive classical architecture, with tall columns and large windows that provide abundant natural light. Both new structures will be equipped with modern safety features, including controlled-access doors and advanced HVAC systems that circulate up to 100% outdoor air for superior indoor air quality.
