It funnels waste from hundreds of miles inland, carrying an estimated 4 million kilograms of plastic toward the ocean annually. At the heart of this crisis lies Bang Kachao, an oxbow peninsula often called Bangkok's "green lung." From above, it’s a verdant oasis of mangrove and forest in a sprawling concrete metropolis. Seven Clean Seas has built its entire model around this philosophy. The organization formally employs 124 waste collectors across its projects in Southeast Asia. This is not gig work. Employees receive long-term contracts, a legal minimum wage, social security, holiday pay, and parental leave—benefits that are nearly unheard of in the informal waste sector.

"These frontline workers are treated like white-collar workers," Peacock-Mayson explained. "When someone knows they're going to get paid next week—even if they get sick or break their leg—they make long-term financial decisions. That's what drives systemic change."

The impact is transformative. The press release highlights Nurati, a collector at a Seven Clean Seas project in Indonesia. After eight years in indebted labor, she joined the organization. Earning 280 percent more than before, she paid off her debt in a year. Then she bought a freezer to start a micro-ice business, and later, a fishing boat for her brother-in-law. A cleanup job became the seed capital for a family enterprise.

This is the dual impact Iron Software is investing in. Its funding supports the barrier in the klong system, but more importantly, it supports the field teams who collect, log, and report the recovered plastic daily. It also helps sustain a separate 20-person team that wades into the Bang Kachao mangroves, retrieving plastic by hand. This integrated system, which also includes a solar-powered catamaran called the 'Hippo' skimming the Chao Phraya, targets pollution at multiple points, all powered by people.

For a software company that builds tools for developers, this people-first approach is a surprisingly natural fit. Iron Software, which has a regional office in Thailand, sees a parallel between its business and its philanthropy.

"We build developer tools, but we've never believed the technology does the work on its own," said Cameron Rimington, CEO of Iron Software. "Our customers—the developers and engineers who use our libraries—are the ones building brilliant things. We provide the tools, they provide the talent and creativity. Seven Clean Seas operates the same way... it's the 124 people they employ who actually make the difference. That's a philosophy we understand and wanted to support."

The partnership is part of a sustained, long-term environmental strategy for the company. Iron Software has already donated over $50,000 to environmental causes like TeamSeas and is a member of 1% for the Planet. For them, this isn't a distant donation but a local partnership, deepened by their presence in Thailand.

Jacob Mellor, the company's CTO, noted the deliberate choice to avoid tech-for-tech's-sake solutions. "There's a tendency in the tech industry to fund solutions that look like us—drones, AI, robots," Mellor said. "But when we looked at Seven Clean Seas, we saw an organisation putting people at the centre. That's the whole point. Tech doesn't solve problems. People do. We just try to give them better tools."

Four years ago, Seven Clean Seas connected with Wat Chak Daeng, a Thai Buddhist temple on the peninsula. "That partnership was actually our first MOU," Peacock-Mayson recalled. "The monks have been doing this work for years... It's phenomenal what they've built."

Building on that success, Seven Clean Seas now holds memoranda of understanding with all six sub-districts of Bang Kachao and Thailand's Department of Marine and Coastal Resources.
