Taipei's New Icon: Zaha Hadid's Final Masterpiece Opens to the Public

The Danjiang Bridge is a testament to the visionary design of Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), which won the international design competition in 2015. The structure is characterized by a single, soaring 200-meter-tall concrete mast, from which cables extend to support the 920-meter-long roadway. This elegant, minimalist design was a deliberate choice to preserve one of the region's most cherished assets: the spectacular sunset views over the Tamsui River estuary. By using a single mast, the design minimizes visual obstruction and reduces the ecological footprint on the sensitive riverbed below.

The new connection will slash travel distance between Tamsui and Bali by 15 kilometers, saving commuters an estimated 25 minutes of driving time. This is expected to alleviate traffic on the chronically congested Guandu Bridge, located five kilometers upstream, by as much as 30%.

The bridge is a linchpin in a broader strategy to enhance the northern coastal traffic network. It seamlessly links major arteries, including Highway 2, Highway 15, the West Coast Expressway (Route 61), and the Bali-Xindian Expressway (Route 64). This improved connectivity will streamline access to the vital Port of Taipei and Taoyuan International Airport, boosting economic activity and logistical efficiency for the entire region. Looking to the future, the bridge's design also incorporates provisions for an extension of the Danhai Light Rail system, underscoring its long-term strategic value for public transportation and sustainable urban development.

A Festival of Art and Community on the Bridge

To celebrate this monumental achievement, the Highway Bureau and the New Taipei City Government have curated a vibrant series of free public events. While a road run on April 18 and a cycling event on April 19 were so popular that registrations filled up almost instantly, the festivities will continue in grand style from April 25 through May 9.

This period will transform the bridge into a public plaza in the sky. The schedule includes large-scale community walks, themed markets showcasing local crafts and cuisine, and a parade featuring artistic groups from Tamsui on April 26. On the evening of May 2, the bridge will become an open-air concert hall, hosting a symphony orchestra and a Golden Melody Award-winning Hakka musician. The following day, May 3, will see a more relaxed atmosphere with public picnics, complete with 100 deck chairs for visitors to lounge and soak in the unparalleled views.

The celebratory series will culminate on May 9 with an official inauguration ceremony. The event will honor the engineers and workers who brought the vision to life and will feature a special performance by the internationally acclaimed Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. The Tamsui-based modern dance group, whose fluid movements reportedly influenced the bridge's design, will present a new work titled "Light Chain," a fitting artistic tribute to the structure's graceful form.

The Danjiang Bridge is poised to become a powerful new magnet for international and domestic tourism. It offers a fresh way to experience Greater Taipei, blending natural scenery, urban culture, and world-class contemporary architecture.
