St. Louis Children's Hospital Launches $400M Campaign to Remake Medicine
ST. LOUIS, MO – January 28, 2026 – St. Louis Children's Hospital today launched the public phase of its monumental "I Am Proof" fundraising campaign, a $400 million effort poised to reshape the future of pediatric health in the region and beyond. Bolstered by an extraordinary $335 million already secured during a private phase, the campaign aims to accelerate groundbreaking research, expand access to care for underserved communities, and enhance the experience for the more than 270,000 children and families who walk through its doors each year.
The eight-year initiative by the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation represents one of the most ambitious healthcare fundraising efforts in the city's history. It builds upon the hospital's nearly 150-year legacy and its consistent ranking as Missouri's top children's hospital by U.S. News & World Report. The campaign is structured around three core pillars: advancing scientific discovery, expanding access to care, and enhancing the patient and family experience.
A New Frontier in Pediatric Discovery
A significant portion of the campaign funds is dedicated to supercharging the hospital's research engine, primarily through its long-standing academic partnership with WashU Medicine and the Children's Discovery Institute (CDI). This investment aims to establish several new, disease-specific centers of excellence, effectively positioning St. Louis as a global hub for pediatric innovation.
These centers will include the McDonnell Pediatric Cancer Research Center, a Center for Gene and Cell-Based Therapies, a Center for Brain Development and Neurological Disorders, and centers focused on immunology, pulmonary disease, and rare genetic conditions. This focused approach is designed to fast-track discoveries from the laboratory bench to the patient's bedside, offering new hope for children with the most complex illnesses.
"Supporting pediatric research is one of the most meaningful investments we can make," said James S. McDonnell, honorary chair of the "I Am Proof" campaign. "Through the Children's Discovery Institute, St. Louis Children's Hospital, its Foundation, and WashU Medicine collaborate to make discoveries that lead to better treatments and cures for children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses."
The partnership with WashU Medicine, which holds a #2 national ranking in NIH funding, has already yielded world-class results. The St. Louis Children’s and Washington University Heart Center, for example, recently became the first in the nation to complete its 600th pediatric heart transplant. However, with national funding for pediatric research facing challenges, philanthropic efforts like "I Am Proof" are becoming increasingly critical to maintaining momentum and pursuing high-risk, high-reward science.
Beyond the Hospital Walls
The campaign places a profound emphasis on health equity, seeking to dismantle barriers that prevent many children from receiving essential care. A key initiative is the expansion of community-based programs like Healthy Kids Express, a fleet of mobile health clinics that bring vital services directly to children where they live and learn.
For over two decades, these vans have been a lifeline for families, providing over 200,000 free health screenings for issues like lead poisoning, anemia, vision, and hearing. Annually, the program serves 20,000 children across St. Louis and the Metro East, delivering everything from immunizations and dental care to specialized asthma management. The "I Am Proof" campaign will not only bolster these existing services but also help launch the nation's first mobile pediatric diabetes specialty care unit.
"My family and I have a deep love and passion for our hometown, and we believe in giving back to help make this community as strong as possible," said Chrissy Taylor, CEO of Enterprise Mobility and campaign co-chair. "Unfortunately, too many children in our region still face barriers to receiving the care they need. Programs like Healthy Kids Express are powerful examples of how this campaign will bring critical services directly to kids who might not receive them otherwise."
Furthering this commitment, the campaign will also support the development of a new mental wellness campus, addressing the growing crisis in pediatric behavioral health by expanding services and increasing access across the region.
A Legacy of Philanthropy and Patient-Centered Care
The campaign's remarkable early success is a testament to the deep-seated support from St. Louis's philanthropic and corporate communities. Leadership commitments have come from a roster of the region's most prominent names, including James S. McDonnell III, members of the Taylor and Kindle families, Enterprise Mobility, Emerson, the Dana Brown Charitable Trust, and Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, among others.
Global automation leader Emerson, for instance, recently committed $5 million to support both the Center for Brain Development and Neurological Disorders and the new Healthy Kids Express diabetes unit, reinforcing a corporate culture of community investment.
This funding also directly supports the campaign's third pillar: enhancing the patient and family experience. Recognizing that a child's illness affects the entire family, the hospital is investing in programs and spaces that provide comfort during profoundly stressful times. Contributions will bolster the St. Louis Children's Center for Families, a 24/7 haven where parents can rest, do laundry, and find solace. Funds will also expand popular programs like pet therapy and support the hospital's state-of-the-art Child Life Zone, a therapeutic play area.
The campaign’s name, "I Am Proof," is drawn from the very patients, families, and caregivers whose stories animate the hospital's mission. These personal journeys are the centerpiece of the campaign's public phase, appearing on billboards and in promotions across the region to illustrate the tangible impact of donor support.
"St. Louis Children's has a storied history of serving children and families with heart, innovation, and excellence," said John Stupp Jr., campaign co-chair. "This campaign both honors that legacy and secures the future—fueling discoveries, advancing cures, and ensuring generations of children continue to receive world-class care and support."
As the hospital continues its ambitious growth—backed by a separate $550 million capital plan to expand facilities—the "I Am Proof" campaign provides the critical fuel for the programs and research that define its excellence, ensuring that for decades to come, more children can become living proof of what is possible when a community invests in its future.
