Spirit of Texas: Restored WWII Plane Takes Veterans on Flights of a Lifetime

GEORGETOWN, Texas – May 01, 2026 – A roar not heard in Texas skies for decades will soon become a sound of honor and remembrance. On May 6, a fully restored 1943 Boeing Stearman biplane, christened the Spirit of Texas, will embark on a nine-city tour across the state with a singular, poignant mission: to give nearly 100 senior military veterans the gift of flight.

The tour, organized by the nonprofit Dream Flights, marks the public debut of this historic aircraft after a painstaking, multi-year restoration. For veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, the experience is more than just a joyride. It is a high-flying tribute, a chance to reconnect with the freedom of the skies in the same type of open-cockpit aircraft that once trained a generation of military aviators.

A Mission of Gratitude Takes Flight

The "Spirit of Texas" tour will launch from Georgetown and weave its way through Pflugerville, Brookshire, Fort Worth, Lubbock, Big Spring, San Antonio, and Castroville, before concluding in Horseshoe Bay on June 9. At each stop, pre-selected veterans from local senior living communities and Texas State Veterans Homes will be carefully helped into the front cockpit of the iconic yellow biplane for a flight they will never forget.

Soaring to an altitude of about 1,000 feet, these 15- to 20-minute flights offer a unique perspective and a powerful emotional connection. Dream Flights, a Nevada-based organization formerly known as the Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation, has been orchestrating these moments since 2011. To date, they have honored over 8,000 veterans across the nation—nearly 500 of them in Texas—entirely free of charge to the veterans and their families.

“This airplane once trained a generation to serve—now it honors them,” said Darryl Fisher, the founder of Dream Flights. The impact, he noted, is often transformative. “Our veterans take off at 90 and land feeling 30 years younger.” This sentiment lies at the heart of the organization's mission: "giving back to those who have given" by creating an unforgettable experience that acknowledges their sacrifice and service.

From War Trainer to Honored Chariot: The Journey of the 'Spirit of Texas'

The story of the Spirit of Texas is a remarkable full-circle narrative of service. Built in 1943, this specific Stearman was originally based at Corpus Christi-Cabaniss Field during World War II, where it was used to train naval aviators for the war effort. After its military service, it transitioned to civilian life, spending years as a crop duster before falling into disuse.

Its journey toward a new, noble purpose began when it was acquired by Shelly Tumbleson, a Texas resident and U.S. Coast Guard veteran. Recognizing the potential to honor fellow service members, Tumbleson generously donated the aircraft to Dream Flights. What followed was an epic restoration project that spanned six years and consumed more than 10,000 volunteer hours.

In a workshop in Dayton, Nevada, a dedicated team of volunteers, including certified Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanics, meticulously rebuilt the aircraft. Every rib, wire, and piece of fabric was carefully restored or replaced, returning the vintage warbird to pristine, airworthy condition. Now, eighty years after it first trained pilots for combat, the Spirit of Texas is flying again, its engine a throaty tribute to the heroes it was built to serve.

More Than a Flight: Soaring Above Memories

For the veterans who climb aboard, a Dream Flight is an intensely personal experience. The rush of wind, the rumble of the radial engine, and the unparalleled view from the open cockpit can evoke a wide range of emotions, from pure joy to deep-seated nostalgia and a profound sense of peace. The organization works closely with senior living facilities, whose activity directors help identify residents who are physically and cognitively able to participate safely.

The selection process is thoughtful, ensuring that as many veterans as possible get to experience the flight. Facilities are encouraged to nominate new individuals each time Dream Flights visits, and veterans living independently can also apply. While safety is paramount—the pilot always has the final say—the goal is inclusivity. The experience is designed to create what the organization calls "unforgettable experiences for our country's military heroes."

The flights themselves are a powerful form of therapeutic recreation, offering a unique break from routine and a tangible connection to a vibrant past. It's a moment of recognition that goes beyond words, medals, or ceremonies. The Spirit of Texas is the eighth Stearman in the Dream Flights fleet, which is strategically staged across the country to maximize its reach.

The mission is fueled by the generosity of national partners, including Sport Clips Haircuts, American Airlines, the Allied Pilots Association, Veterans United Home Loans, Vital Life Foundation, and Incite Strategic Partners. Their support ensures that the flights remain completely free for the veterans.

Equally vital are the dedicated volunteers on the ground and in the air. The pilots, many of whom are retired military and commercial aviators, bring a wealth of experience and a shared sense of purpose. They undergo rigorous year-round training at Dream Flights University, a dedicated facility at Castroville Municipal Airport in Texas. Led by volunteer instructor and Southwest Airlines pilot Darren Bond, this training program ensures that safety remains the absolute top priority. These pilots don't just fly planes; they serve as hosts, historians, and friends to the veterans they honor.
