The threat of laser strikes is not abstract. The FAA has documented over 300 pilot injuries since 2010, and the actual number of disorienting incidents is likely far higher. “Being lased is like a camera flash going off inside your eye in a pitch-black room,” one commercial airline pilot explained. “You’re momentarily blind, and it takes precious seconds to recover—seconds you don’t have on final approach.”
Until now, the solutions have been deeply flawed. Traditional LEP eyewear functions like a blunt instrument, using fixed-dye filters that block the specific wavelengths of common green or red lasers. While effective at stopping that light, they also block adjacent colors, leading to significant color distortion. In a modern cockpit, where instrument panels, warning lights, and heads-up displays are a symphony of color-coded information, this is more than an inconvenience; it’s a safety hazard. Pilots have been reluctant to adopt gear that could cause them to misinterpret a critical warning, forcing them to rely on luck and rapid aversion maneuvers to avoid injury.
This gap in capability has been a known issue for years, a problem minimized not because it wasn’t serious, but because a viable solution seemed perpetually out of reach. The industry accepted the trade-off because it had no other choice. SentinelOps™ is Cambium’s direct challenge to that acceptance.

At the core of SentinelOps™ is what the El Segundo-based company calls its “integrated materials platform.” This system combines AI-driven materials discovery with rapid prototyping and manufacturing, drastically shortening the timeline from concept to commercial product. It was accelerated through strategic partnerships with the U.S. Department of Defense, notably via BioMADE, the Bioindustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem. This DoD-backed consortium aims to bolster America’s industrial base with novel, bio-manufactured materials. Cambium’s involvement signals that the Pentagon views this capability as a strategic imperative, not just for protecting commercial pilots, but for shielding military personnel and sensitive optics from directed-energy threats on the modern battlefield.
Further validation comes from a long-standing collaboration with the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) at China Lake, a premier military testing ground. This partnership provided critical technical support and live-fire demonstrations, putting the technology through its paces in real-world scenarios.
“SentinelOps is built on a simple premise: laser and directed energy protection shouldn't be limited by form factor,” said Cambium Senior Optics Products Manager Kevin Nottage. “Color fidelity and visual acuity had become tradeoffs the industry simply accepted. SentinelOps doesn't accept those tradeoffs.”
Beyond Eyewear: A Platform for Protection
While the initial product is pilot eyewear—available with prescriptions and made from PFAS-free materials—Cambium’s ambition is far broader. The company stresses that SentinelOps™ is a “form-factor agnostic” platform. The same fundamental material science can be scaled and adapted for integration into cockpit windscreens, helmet visors, the protective housings for sensitive optical sensors on drones and satellites, and even transparent armor.
This strategy transforms the technology from a simple piece of personal protective equipment into a foundational defensive layer for entire platforms. Protecting a multi-million-dollar sensor suite on a surveillance aircraft or ensuring a satellite’s optics can’t be dazzled by a ground-based laser are high-stakes problems that Cambium is positioning itself to solve. This expansive vision is backed by serious capital; the company secured a $100 million Series B funding round in January 2026 to scale its manufacturing and accelerate product development, signaling strong investor confidence in its disruptive potential.
The technology is making its public debut this week at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the world's largest gathering of aviation enthusiasts, followed by a presentation at the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) Air Safety Forum in September.
