In 2007, the first Good Deeds Day was a modest affair, with 7,000 participants undertaking 130 projects across Israel. It was launched by Ruach Tova ('Good Spirit'), a non-profit organization under the Arison Group's philanthropic arm, driven by Arison's personal philosophy: "if people will think good, speak good and do good, the circles of goodness will grow in the world."

The growth that followed was anything but modest. By 2011, the initiative expanded internationally. By 2019, it had swelled to include nearly 4 million volunteers in 108 countries, contributing almost 8 million hours of service. This year, celebrating two decades under the banner "United in Good – 20 Years of Doing Good from the Heart," the movement continued its upward trajectory, cementing its status as one of the world's largest and most inclusive platforms for civic engagement.

The organizational structure, which provides a framework for thousands of NGOs, businesses, and individuals, has been key to this exponential growth. In Mongolia, the event was preceded by a month-long, youth-led campaign called "MY PROVINCE – MY GOOD DEED," mobilizing over 25,000 people and 600 organizations across 21 provinces. In Haiti, the day's activities expanded to 13 cities, with 4,000 volunteers directly impacting 13,000 community members through vital projects focused on healthcare, women's empowerment, and support for vulnerable populations.

Environmental stewardship was a common theme. In Cambodia, thousands of students participated in cleanups and tree planting, including a significant effort around the Tonlé Sap lake. Meanwhile, Kenya, which recently granted Good Deeds Day official recognition as a national day of service, saw thousands participate in environmental initiatives alongside programs providing business education for women and civic education for youth.

Even as a global event, the personal touch remains central. In Miami, the movement's initiator, Shari Arison, personally joined hundreds of volunteers with the Jewish Federation to prepare and distribute meals for the elderly and organize clothing donations. This hands-on participation underscores the ethos that every person, regardless of their station, has a role to play.

Critics of single-day volunteer events often question their long-term impact.
