Nutanix's New Gambit: A Dual-Native Bridge for Agentic AI

SAN JOSE, CA – August 26, 2026 – Nutanix today unveiled a significant expansion of its cloud platform, a strategic maneuver aimed squarely at one of the most complex and pressing challenges facing modern enterprises: putting autonomous, or “agentic,” AI into production. With the launch of Nutanix Enterprise AI (NAI) 2.8 and the impending release of its Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) 2.19, the hybrid cloud firm is signaling a clear strategy: instead of forcing businesses to build new, isolated AI factories, it wants to bring AI to where enterprise data already lives.

This move comes as enterprises grapple with the immense potential and profound risks of agentic AI—systems that can autonomously plan and execute complex tasks. NKP 2.19, which will be available soon, is central to this vision. It promises to simplify container management across both bare metal and virtualized environments, a crucial capability for organizations looking to scale container-based AI applications. Its built-in AI Applications Catalog, offering one-click deployment for tools like Kubeflow and Milvus, is designed to lower the barrier to entry for building agentic AI. Furthermore, its CNCF certification for Kubernetes AI conformance provides an assurance of standardization, a critical factor for enterprises wary of vendor lock-in.

This approach directly challenges the infrastructure strategies of competitors. While public cloud giants like AWS and Google offer powerful, scalable AI services, they often pull data and workloads into their own ecosystems. Meanwhile, hardware-centric players like Dell and HPE are promoting turnkey “AI Factory” solutions, which can represent another significant capital investment. Nutanix is positioning itself as the pragmatic middle ground, enabling on-premises control and data locality while providing a consistent bridge to public cloud resources. Taming the Rogue Agent: Governance and Security Take Center Stage

As agentic AI moves from pilot to production, governance and security have become paramount concerns. The autonomous nature of AI agents introduces significant risks, from “identity sprawl” caused by a proliferation of service accounts to the potential for “rogue models” to operate outside of intended boundaries, creating security vulnerabilities. Nutanix is addressing these fears head-on with NAI 2.8.

The platform's new Agent Gateway, now with a generally available Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateway, acts as a secure front door for AI agents, governing how they connect to applications and data. This is complemented by enhanced security features, including fine-grained Identity and Access Management (IAM) and support for air-gapped NVIDIA NIM deployments. Nutanix is also enhancing its private inference capabilities to deliver scalable, multi-GPU performance for large language models (LLMs). Features like parameter-efficient fine-tuning and speculative decoding aim to make it more cost-effective and faster for organizations to customize open-source models on their private data. The recent NVIDIA-Certified Storage validation for Nutanix Unified Storage further bolsters this, ensuring a high-throughput data path to GPUs that minimizes bottlenecks and maximizes utilization.

With a recent Gartner forecast projecting that 55% of enterprises will migrate workloads away from VMware by 2029, the competitive landscape for virtualization and cloud infrastructure is being redrawn. The newly launched 'Powered by Nutanix: Verified Services' program is designed to help partners build high-margin, recurring revenue practices around hybrid cloud, Kubernetes, and AI deployments. Simultaneously, the general availability of SP Central offers a unified multitenant control plane for service providers.
