PHILADELPHIA, PA – April 09, 2026 – A significant infusion of corporate capital is set to accelerate the transformation of a beloved Philadelphia landmark. NRG Energy Inc., a Fortune 200 energy and smart home company, alongside its subsidiary Vivint, has announced a $500,000 investment in the Cobbs Creek Foundation. This partnership aims to bolster the sweeping revitalization of the historic Cobbs Creek Golf & Education Campus, a project that marries environmental restoration with expanded educational and economic opportunities for the West Philadelphia community.

A New Chapter for a Historic Landmark

Once a jewel of public golf, the Cobbs Creek Golf Course, which first opened in 1916 with a progressive policy of welcoming all genders, races, and religions, had fallen into disrepair. Decades of neglect and persistent flooding from the adjacent creek led to its closure in 2020. Now, the 350-acre green space is the subject of an ambitious, multi-phase revitalization effort led by the nonprofit Cobbs Creek Foundation, with a total project cost estimated to be around $180 million.

Progress is already visible on the sprawling campus. The Lincoln Financial Center, featuring a 68-bay driving range with Toptracer technology, and the "Q School" short course designed by Tiger Woods' TGR Design, opened in 2025. Crucially, the extensive environmental restoration work is approximately halfway complete. This includes excavating waterways, creating 25 acres of floodplain wetlands, and planting nearly 50,000 native trees and plants—a direct response to community concerns about flooding that historically plagued the area. The Foundation's $30 million investment in creek improvements, supplemented by over $9 million from the city, is fundamental to the site's long-term sustainability.

While the historic 18-hole Olde Course is slated for a grand reopening in Fall 2027, the campus is already buzzing with activity, serving as a beacon of the promised renewal.

Fusing Energy, Technology, and Education

The $500,000 investment from NRG and Vivint is earmarked to enhance this momentum, specifically by supporting youth programming and integrating sustainable technology. A central component of the collaboration is the branding of the main gathering space within the campus's Smilow Woodland TGR Learning Lab as the “Vivint + NRG Hub.” This hub will serve as a dedicated area for student connection, collaboration, and learning.

Operated by the TGR Foundation, the learning lab already serves over 4,500 local students annually, offering free, innovative programs in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM), alongside career readiness and wellness initiatives. The partnership with NRG and Vivint, which serve over 8 million residential customers, promises to infuse this curriculum with real-world expertise in smart energy solutions.
