Norway's Rails Go Digital in Landmark ZetaDisplay-Vy Partnership
MALMÖ, SWEDEN – April 14, 2026
Norway’s national rail operator, the Vy Group, is set to fundamentally transform its passenger experience and onboard commercial strategy through a landmark agreement with digital signage leader ZetaDisplay. In what is being called one of the largest onboard media contracts in the Nordic region, ZetaDisplay will deploy a next-generation digital network across a significant portion of Vy’s train fleet, heralding a new era for commuters and advertisers alike.
The ambitious project, awarded after a highly competitive public tender, will see approximately 1,400 custom-designed digital displays installed across 135 trains. These routes serve critical corridors in the Western and Eastern parts of Norway, including the bustling Oslo metropolitan area. This initiative represents the largest rollout of its kind in the country, establishing a powerful new communication and media platform on rails.
Beyond Tickets: Tapping a New Digital Revenue Stream
At the heart of this partnership lies a strategic shift for Vy, moving beyond ticket sales to unlock substantial new revenue streams. The project establishes a sophisticated onboard retail and commerce media network powered by programmatic Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) technology. This allows Vy to monetize the significant dwell time of its passengers, who often spend 15 to 45 minutes or more on their journeys with limited distractions.
The Nordic market is proving to be a fertile ground for such innovation. Recent industry analysis shows that investment in programmatic DOOH in the region is projected to grow by 37% over the next year, far outpacing the global average of 28%. This partnership places Vy and ZetaDisplay at the forefront of this trend. For advertisers, the network offers unprecedented targeting capabilities. Campaigns can be triggered and tailored based on real-time data, most notably the GPS location of each train. This enables hyper-contextual messaging; a retailer could advertise a sale as the train approaches the station nearest its store, or a local café could promote a coffee special to morning commuters.
This level of precision targeting is highly attractive to marketers seeking to maximize their return on investment and reach a captive audience. The broader European DOOH market is projected to surge from USD 3.36 billion in 2024 to over USD 8 billion by 2033, driven by this very capability to integrate real-time data for contextual campaigns. By transforming its train cars into dynamic media spaces, Vy is not just modernizing its fleet but also building a lucrative new commercial asset.
Redefining the Passenger Journey
While the commercial implications are significant, the project is equally focused on enhancing the travel experience for hundreds of thousands of daily passengers. The new digital screens will serve a dual purpose: delivering critical, real-time travel information alongside dynamic, engaging commercial content. This integrated approach aims to make journeys more seamless, informative, and enjoyable.
"We are pleased to partner with ZetaDisplay to bring this innovative onboard system to our trains," commented Sigurd Bay, Commercial Director at Vy Train. "By equipping our fleet with these advanced screens, we can keep passengers better informed and make their journeys more enjoyable. This investment is part of our broader commitment to continuously improving the travel experience for our customers.”
Instead of static maps and intermittent announcements, passengers will see live updates on arrival times, connections, and potential disruptions, all presented clearly on high-definition displays. This is seamlessly blended with content that can be tailored to the time of day, the specific route, or even the weather, making the advertising feel more relevant and less intrusive. This strategy aligns with research showing that digital transit advertising, when done well, is often perceived by consumers as useful and memorable, leading to high message recall.
Engineered for the Demanding Rail Environment
Deploying sophisticated electronics in a moving train presents a host of engineering challenges, from constant vibration to extreme temperature fluctuations. To meet these demands, ZetaDisplay collaborated with its manufacturing partner Kuori to develop a custom 32-inch onboard display built specifically for the railway environment.
These displays are not off-the-shelf screens. They are fully compliant with the stringent EN 50155 European standard for electronic equipment used on railway rolling stock. This certification ensures they can reliably withstand the shock, humidity, and electromagnetic interference common on trains. The hardware is housed in a robust, IP-rated aluminum enclosure and features hardened, anti-reflective glass. Furthermore, a technique called optical bonding is used to fuse the glass to the display panel, which enhances durability and improves readability in bright conditions.
Recognizing that reliability is paramount for a mission-critical system, the displays also feature a modular design. This allows for fast on-site maintenance and efficient component replacement, a crucial feature for minimizing downtime and ensuring the network remains consistently operational across the entire fleet.
The Intelligent Software Powering the Network
The entire ecosystem of screens will be managed by ZetaDisplay’s proprietary Engage Suite, a powerful cloud-based Content Management System (CMS). This software platform is the brain of the operation, enabling the advanced content scheduling, programmatic campaign delivery, and detailed performance reporting that make the network so valuable. Its modular architecture allows for deep integration with third-party data sources, which is key to enabling the real-time, data-driven advertising.
"This is a landmark agreement for ZetaDisplay and a significant milestone in our transport media and DOOH strategy," said Ola Sæverås, Chief Business Officer at ZetaDisplay. "By combining real-time passenger communication with advanced media and programmatic capabilities, we are transforming onboard environments into connected, data-driven platforms that enhance the passenger experience while creating new commercial opportunities for operators like Vy.”
This project builds on ZetaDisplay’s extensive 25-year experience in the transport sector, with a portfolio that includes successful deployments for other major operators like Sweden's SJ, the Arlanda Express A-Train, and Norway's Flytoget airport express. This deep sector expertise, combined with its credentials in the rapidly growing retail media space, uniquely positioned the company to win the competitive bid and deliver a solution that bridges the gap between passenger service and commercial innovation.
Feature development and concept design for the new network are already underway, with the full system across all 135 trains expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026.
