MEMPHIS, TN – January 13, 2026 – The National Civil Rights Museum is set to host a landmark celebration this Monday, January 19, honoring the 40th anniversary of the federal Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. But this year’s event transcends a single day of remembrance. It marks the official launch of the museum’s “Legacy Year,” a year-long commemoration of its own 35th anniversary that signals a profound evolution for the institution, anchored by the highly anticipated reopening of its renovated Legacy experience in 2026.

From 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the historic grounds of the Lorraine Motel will welcome the community for a day of reflection and engagement, featuring free admission, service opportunities, and family-friendly activities designed to connect Dr. King's enduring message with contemporary challenges.

The day is framed as a “day on, not a day off,” a principle made tangible through on-site service opportunities. Visitors are encouraged to participate in a blood drive with Vitalant and contribute to a food drive benefiting the Mid-South Food Bank, turning commemoration into direct community action.

The launch of the Legacy Year provides a glimpse into the museum's ambitious future, centered on the reopening of its Legacy Building in Spring 2026. The new experience is structured around five powerful thematic galleries exploring the persistent structural inequalities in poverty, education, housing, and gender equity. Drawing inspiration from Dr. King’s last book, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?, the exhibits will challenge visitors to confront how these historical struggles continue to shape American life. The renovation will also introduce a detailed gallery exploring the myriad investigations into Dr. King’s assassination, presenting newly uncovered documents alongside longstanding conspiracy theories.

Multimedia narratives from modern changemakers and interactive digital surveys will prompt visitors to reflect on contemporary activism and solidarity. The addition of flexible gallery and classroom spaces will allow the museum to mount rapid-response exhibitions, ensuring the institution remains a relevant voice in unfolding national conversations.
