This week, a coalition of partners announced the completion of the ConocoPhillips Pelto Island Reef, an ambitious habitat restoration project that does more than just place rocks on the seafloor. It resurrects a piece of local history by blending corporate investment, state oversight, conservation expertise, and cutting-edge technology. The project, spearheaded by the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Louisiana in partnership with ConocoPhillips and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), is a testament to what’s possible when diverse interests align for a common ecological and cultural cause.

For decades, a V-shaped spit of land stood in Lake Pelto, its most famous feature a two-story crew quarters painted a memorable bright pink. Dubbed the “Pink Palace,” it was a guidepost visible for miles, a reassuring beacon for boaters navigating the labyrinthine waters between Cocodrie and the barrier islands.
It was a place woven into the fabric of family histories. “Half of this parish has a story like ours,” said Ryan Page, Chief Marketing Officer for CCA Louisiana and a Terrebonne Parish native. “Some of our earliest memories on the water are right here at the Sulphur Mine.”
Those stories are of personal-best speckled trout, of families learning to fish together, and of riding out sudden summer squalls in the shelter of the island’s camps. But time, tide, and relentless coastal subsidence took their toll. The Pink Palace is long gone, and the island itself has been steadily eroding, leaving behind a hazardous underwater junkyard of old pilings and metal. Yet, the fish never left, and neither did the anglers who cherished the spot.
“There were real concerns about this place going away,” said Jason Bergeron, President of Terrebonne Parish. “To see ConocoPhillips, Danos, CCA, Natrx and the state all step up and come together to maintain the habitat we grew up fishing, while making it safer at the same time, means everything to this parish.”
That deep, decades-long attachment is the emotional bedrock of this restoration. The project’s first phase, completed this summer, involved a massive cleanup, removing the dangerous debris. Crews then strategically reshaped the remaining rock into the footprint of the new reef, laying the foundation for its next chapter.

In 1997, its subsidiary donated 1,630 acres of the nearby Isles Dernières barrier islands to the state, ensuring their permanent protection. The Pelto Island project is a continuation of that legacy. “ConocoPhillips is excited to collaborate with CCA Louisiana to enhance fish and other marine life habitat in Terrebonne Parish,” said John Harrington, a manager with the company. “We are proud to be part of developing the ConocoPhillips Pelto Island Reef that will continue the legacy of this historical fishing spot for future generations.”

This week, the project entered its most innovative phase. A barge carefully lowered 650 precisely engineered structures into the water. These aren't just random concrete blocks. They are Natrx ExoForm reef modules, three-dimensional structures made from 3D-printed concrete, custom-designed to create ideal habitats for speckled trout and redfish.
Manufactured locally at a facility in Amelia, Louisiana, the modules feature complex void spaces and high surface area to encourage marine growth and provide shelter for fish. This represents a leap forward from traditional artificial reefs, using technology to build a nature-based solution that is both resilient and ecologically productive.
Crucially, the design wasn’t left to engineers alone. In a move that grounds the high-tech approach in practical wisdom, the entire layout was shaped by direct input from local fishing guides. Their real-world knowledge of how currents flow and where fish congregate was integrated into the final placement of each module. “We designed a reef built with input from the guides who fish it every week,” explained Rad Trascher, Executive Director/CEO of CCA Louisiana.
The entire installation was a distinctly Louisiana-built affair. The modules were made in-state, and the complex construction process was managed by Danos, a family-owned energy services company headquartered just miles away in Gray, Louisiana. “Danos is proud to support the Pelto Island Reef project and the collaborative effort to strengthen Louisiana’s coast,” said Eric Danos.

While the long-term ecological benefits will be measured over years, the reef is already proving its worth. Throughout the summer construction, anglers continued to report solid catches of speckled trout at the site, a promising sign of the area’s inherent productivity.
