A Virtual Apprenticeship
Instead of gathering around a shared workbench, students in the pilot program’s "DC Circuit Fundamentals" course are using Meta Quest headsets to build functional electrical circuits in a virtual lab. They can manipulate simulated wires, resistors, and measurement tools, learning by doing in a gamified, story-driven environment. This is the core of Dunwoody Immersive: preserving the hands-on, applied learning central to technical education while removing the physical and financial barriers that have traditionally kept it out of most high schools.
For decades, offering robust vocational training has been a challenge for secondary schools. The specialized labs and heavy equipment required for fields like welding, robotics, or advanced manufacturing are prohibitively expensive. Dunwoody’s model sidesteps this obstacle by replacing the physical lab with a virtual one. The program is piloting with two courses, DC Circuit Fundamentals and Early Global Architecture, across six partner schools, including Edina Virtual Pathways, Eden Prairie Schools, and Hermantown Community Schools.

Critically, the virtual environment also offers a unique pedagogical advantage: safety. "This isn't VR for the sake of VR," explained Brad Hosack, chief operating officer of Dunwoody Immersive. "It's VR because it lets students safely try things they'd never get to do in a real lab." Students can make mistakes, experiment with complex systems, and repeat tasks without risk of injury or wasting costly materials.
While the potential is enormous, the approach is not without its challenges. The long-term transferability of skills from a purely virtual environment to the tactile, unpredictable nature of a real-world job site remains a key area of focus. "We built Dunwoody Immersive because a student's ZIP code shouldn't decide whether they get a shot at a high-paying career in the skilled trades," said Cindy Olson, the college's vice president of enrollment management. "This closes that gap."
By delivering the curriculum digitally, the program makes elite technical education available to students in rural, suburban, and urban districts alike. It also integrates with Minnesota's Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program, which allows eligible students to take college courses tuition-free. Unlike traditional PSEO that often requires students to travel to a college campus—diverting local school funding and removing students from their high school community—this model keeps them on-site, a key benefit for both students and schools.
Participating school administrators see this as a powerful tool for student engagement and career exploration. "Our mission is to inspire each student every day, and an important part of that is creating authentic opportunities for students to explore their interests, discover their strengths, and begin imagining what might be possible for their future," noted Dr. Josh Swanson, Superintendent of Eden Prairie Schools, one of the pilot districts.
