McAllen's Digital Bridge: New Exchange Fortifies US-Mexico Data Link
MCALLEN, TX – December 16, 2025 – In a significant move to bolster digital infrastructure at the U.S.-Mexico border, fifteenfortyseven Critical Systems Realty (1547) has officially launched the McAllen Internet Exchange (MCT-IX). Housed within the company's Chase Tower facility, the region's primary carrier hotel, this new exchange is poised to redefine how data travels between the two nations, supported by a multi-million dollar investment and major expansion plans.
The initiative solidifies McAllen’s burgeoning reputation as a critical digital crossroads. The MCT-IX, formally recognized by the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) under ASN AS402079, is already operational with early port commitments from multiple network operators, signaling strong market demand for more efficient, localized connectivity.
A New Digital Crossroads for the Americas
For years, McAllen has served as a vital physical gateway for trade, and its role as a digital gateway is now rapidly accelerating. The Chase Tower, often called the “60 Hudson of South Texas,” has long been the most interconnected building in the region, acting as a natural aggregation point for networks crossing the border. The establishment of MCT-IX inside this existing ecosystem is a strategic masterstroke, designed to offer a more direct and efficient path for data exchange.
Historically, much of the data traffic between the U.S. and Mexico, even if originating near the border, would travel hundreds of miles north to major hubs like Dallas or Houston for peering before returning south. This process introduces unnecessary latency and complexity. The MCT-IX addresses this inefficiency head-on by creating a localized peering point. This allows networks—including internet service providers, content delivery networks (CDNs), and cloud providers—to exchange traffic directly in McAllen, dramatically reducing latency and giving them greater control over routing performance.
The timing aligns with powerful economic trends, including a surge in nearshoring as companies relocate manufacturing and supply chains from Asia to Mexico. This shift is driving unprecedented growth in cross-border trade, which already exceeds $40 million annually in the region, and an explosive demand for robust, low-latency digital infrastructure to support these operations.
“Announcing MCT-IX is an important milestone for both 1547 and the McAllen market,” said J. Todd Raymond, CEO and Managing Director of 1547. “With formal ARIN recognition and early port commitments already underway, it is clear there is strong demand for an Internet Exchange that builds on the long-established interconnection ecosystem inside Chase Tower. As owners of the carrier hotel, we are committed to supporting this next phase of growth.”
Fortifying the Hub: A Multi-Million Dollar Investment
Backing the launch of the exchange is a substantial capital investment by 1547 into the Chase Tower itself. The company has poured over $6 million into comprehensive upgrades of the building's critical systems to ensure it can support the next generation of digital demand. These enhancements include modernizing backup power systems, overhauling the entire HVAC and central cooling plant, and upgrading fire, life safety, and elevator systems.
Beyond foundational upgrades, 1547 has also significantly expanded the building's interconnection fabric. A new, dedicated meet-me room (MMR) and a specialized carrier room have been developed, complementing the two existing carrier-neutral MMRs. This new space is built to accommodate dozens of carrier cabinets, providing a streamlined and scalable environment for networks to connect with one another, the MCT-IX, and the more than 46 carriers already operating within the building.
This “interconnection-first” strategy is a hallmark of 1547, which has a track record of acquiring and developing data centers in underserved but strategic Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. The acquisition of the Chase Tower in late 2022, along with its existing data center tenant CarrierCom, set the stage for this ambitious expansion, transforming the property into a world-class, purpose-built connectivity hub.
A Leap in Network Performance and Future Capacity
The immediate impact of MCT-IX will be felt by network engineers and IT professionals who manage cross-border data flows. With a switching capacity of 6.4 Tbps and support for port speeds up to 100 Gbps, the exchange provides the high-performance backbone needed for modern digital services. The ability to establish direct, carrier-neutral peering simplifies network architecture and provides a scalable, low-latency alternative to relying solely on traditional IP transit.
This enhancement is critical for a variety of use cases, from providing Mexican businesses with low-latency access to U.S.-based cloud platforms to enabling content providers to deliver a better streaming experience to users across the region. It also offers crucial route diversity for networks, strengthening overall resilience.
“Across Chase Tower, we are seeing measurable increases in interconnection activity, from new deployments to expanded capacity and growing interest in route diversity,” noted John Bonczek, Chief Revenue Officer of 1547. “MCT-IX aligns perfectly with the needs of the ecosystem inside the building. As development continues, the exchange will complement our upcoming expansion and further strengthen McAllen as a critical cross-border connectivity hub.”
Powering Tomorrow's Data Demands
1547’s vision for McAllen extends well beyond the current upgrades. The company is actively constructing significant new capacity to meet future demand. An additional 500 kilowatts (kW) of colocation space is being built out within the Chase Tower, providing more inventory for new and existing tenants.
More ambitious still is the construction of a brand-new, 3 megawatt (MW), 13,000-square-foot dedicated data center annex adjacent to the main building. This purpose-built facility will dramatically increase the power and space available, catering to larger-scale deployments and high-density computing needs driven by AI and other data-intensive applications.
Both the 500 kW infill and the 3 MW annex are targeted for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026. This combined 3.5 MW expansion represents a massive boost to the region's data center capacity and demonstrates 1547's long-term commitment to the market. This forward-looking investment ensures that as the digital traffic between the U.S. and Mexico continues to grow, the infrastructure in McAllen will be ready to handle the load, cementing its status as an indispensable node in North America's digital economy.
