Infortar Diversifies into Biogas: Estonian Energy Play Bolsters Renewable Portfolio
AS Infortar’s acquisition of Oisu Biogaas OÜ signals a growing commitment to renewable energy and a strategic move to capitalize on the burgeoning Estonian biogas market. The deal expands the company’s portfolio and strengthens its position in the green energy sector.
Infortar Diversifies into Biogas: Estonian Energy Play Bolsters Renewable Portfolio
TALLINN, ESTONIA – November 20, 2025 – AS Infortar has solidified its commitment to renewable energy with the full acquisition of Oisu Biogaas OÜ, a leading Estonian biogas producer. The move, completed in two stages through subsidiary OÜ Infortar Agro, expands the diversified holding company’s portfolio beyond maritime transport, real estate, and existing energy holdings, positioning it to capitalize on the rapidly growing demand for green energy solutions in the Baltic region.
Expanding the Energy Portfolio
The acquisition of Oisu Biogaas, which operates a biogas plant with a 0.7 MW electrical capacity and an upgraded biomethane production facility capable of exceeding 500 Nm³/h, is a strategic fit for Infortar. The company, which already owns AS Elenger Grupp and holds a significant stake in Tallink Grupp, has been actively exploring opportunities to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce its carbon footprint. “This wasn’t about entering a completely new market; it was about strengthening our existing position and adding a valuable component to our green energy ecosystem,” explains a source close to the deal. The Oisu plant's ability to process diverse feedstocks, from agricultural waste to food waste, aligns with Infortar’s commitment to circular economy principles.
Oisu Biogaas’s financials demonstrate substantial growth, with 2024 net sales reaching €4,083,546 – a 161.2% increase year-over-year – and net profit of €952,421. Forecasts indicate continued growth in 2025, projecting a turnover of €4,189,597. This financial performance likely contributed to Infortar’s decision to pursue full ownership. The acquisition was completed after receiving approval from the Estonian Competition Authority, underscoring the regulatory support for consolidation in the renewable energy sector.
The Estonian Biogas Market: A Growing Opportunity
The acquisition comes at a pivotal time for the Estonian biogas market. Driven by EU renewable energy targets and a growing national commitment to sustainability, the country is actively promoting biomethane as a viable alternative to fossil fuels, particularly in the transport sector. The Estonian government has implemented policies to encourage biogas production, including funding mechanisms and incentives for utilizing renewable energy sources. “Estonia is well-positioned to become a leader in biomethane production in the Baltic region,” says an industry analyst familiar with the market. “The country has a strong agricultural sector, abundant biomass resources, and a supportive regulatory environment.”
Several factors are driving this growth. The increased cost of traditional energy sources, coupled with a growing public awareness of climate change, is fueling demand for cleaner alternatives. Furthermore, the Estonian government is actively encouraging the use of biomethane in public transport, with several cities already operating buses powered by renewable gas. The existing infrastructure, combined with new investments in biomethane production facilities, is creating a favorable environment for continued growth.
Synergies and Strategic Integration
Infortar’s acquisition of Oisu Biogaas is not simply a financial investment; it is a strategic integration of assets and expertise. The company’s existing agricultural holdings, including Estonia Farmid, a large agricultural company, are expected to play a crucial role in supplying feedstock to the Oisu biogas plant. This vertical integration will enhance supply chain efficiency and reduce reliance on external suppliers. “This move provides Infortar with greater control over its entire value chain, from raw material sourcing to energy production,” explains another industry source.
Furthermore, the acquisition is expected to create synergies with Infortar’s existing energy holdings, particularly AS Elenger Grupp, a leading provider of natural gas and renewable energy solutions in the Baltic region. Elenger will be responsible for distributing the biomethane produced at the Oisu plant to consumers, expanding its portfolio of green energy offerings. Infortar’s total investment in biomethane plants, including Oisu, Ilmatsalu, and Vinni, now totals approximately €30 million, demonstrating the company’s long-term commitment to renewable energy. The upgraded biomethane facility at Oisu, capable of exceeding 500 Nm³/h, will play a key role in meeting the growing demand for renewable gas in the region. “We’re confident that this acquisition will generate significant value for our shareholders and contribute to a more sustainable future,” a spokesperson for Infortar stated.
