Informa's Incubator Lifts Black Designers Above Industry Barriers
NEW YORK, NY – February 04, 2026 – FASHION by Informa has once again cast a spotlight on the future of the industry, unveiling the 2026 class for its acclaimed Incubator Program. The initiative, now in its sixth year, is dedicated to empowering and elevating emerging Black-owned fashion brands, providing a critical launchpad in an industry where such opportunities remain scarce. This year’s cohort of 12 brands will gain unprecedented access to mentorship, marketing, and the powerful wholesale engines of COTERIE, PROJECT, and MAGIC.
The announcement comes at a time when the fashion world continues to grapple with its promises of diversity and inclusion. While conversations around equity have grown louder, tangible, systemic support for Black entrepreneurs often lags. FASHION by Informa's program stands out as a direct and sustained intervention, aiming to transform dialogue into concrete business success.
A Strategic Lifeline in a Challenging Industry
For Black fashion entrepreneurs, the path to success is often fraught with systemic obstacles that their white counterparts do not face. Chief among these is a stark disparity in access to capital. Research consistently shows that Black business owners are significantly less likely to receive the funding they need to scale. One study found that while Black entrepreneurs are three times more likely to need financing, only 47% receive the full amount requested from financial institutions, compared to 76% for white business owners.
This financial barrier is compounded by a lack of representation in key industry roles. Despite Black consumers driving a significant portion of fashion spending—accounting for an estimated 20% of the luxury market in the U.S. in 2019—Black designers remain profoundly underrepresented, making up less than 5% of the total. This disconnect highlights a structural failure to provide pathways for Black talent to thrive.
The FASHION by Informa Incubator Program is engineered to directly counteract these challenges. By focusing exclusively on Black-owned brands that have been in operation for less than three years and are equipped for wholesale orders, the program targets a crucial growth stage. It provides a debt-free infusion of resources—not capital, but access and visibility that are often just as valuable. The initiative offers a complimentary presence at two seasons of Informa’s flagship trade events, placing these emerging brands directly in front of the industry's most influential buyers and retailers.
“FASHION by Informa is deeply committed to championing opportunities for emerging brands, providing them with the resources they need to further succeed in the ever-evolving fashion landscape,” said Edwina Kulego, VP, Global Business Development & Growth, FASHION by Informa. “The Incubator Program is more than just a platform, it’s a launchpad for creativity, innovation, and long-term success.”
More Than a Showcase: Building Sustainable Businesses
While many initiatives offer exposure, Informa's program distinguishes itself by focusing on the foundational elements of long-term business viability. It goes beyond a single moment on a runway to build a framework for sustainable growth. Participants receive a comprehensive support package designed to address the multifaceted needs of a young brand.
The core of the program is the unparalleled market access. Each brand receives a fully equipped booth at either COTERIE in New York or PROJECT or MAGIC in Las Vegas. These events are the lifeblood of the wholesale fashion industry, where relationships are built and orders that sustain a business for seasons to come are written. For a new brand, the cost and connections required to participate are often prohibitive barriers to entry. The Incubator removes them.
This access is amplified by comprehensive marketing support, including targeted social media campaigns and editorial features in Informa's widely read “Meet the Brands” series. This ensures that the stories and unique design perspectives of the participating brands reach a global audience of retailers and press, helping them cut through the noise of a crowded marketplace.
Perhaps most critically, the program includes one-on-one mentorship with established industry experts and retail consultants. This guidance helps founders navigate the complex logistics of production, pricing, distribution, and scaling—the very areas where promising brands can falter without experienced counsel. This focus on building business acumen is what separates a temporary “hype” brand from one with true longevity.
A Legacy of Growth and Opportunity
Since its inception in 2020, the Incubator Program has nurtured over 50 brands, creating a growing alumni network whose success serves as a testament to the program's efficacy. The impact is not just anecdotal; it is visible in retail placements and industry recognition.
A standout example is Goat by James King, a 2025 alumnus. Following its participation, the brand secured a coveted spot to show at New York Men’s Day (NYMD) on February 11th, a prestigious platform for emerging menswear. Furthermore, the brand launched a multi-month trunk show at Bloomingdale's, a major retail achievement that demonstrates a clear trajectory from incubation to commercial success. This progression illustrates the program's role as a genuine pipeline connecting new talent to established retail channels.
The success of alumni like UGLYDUKLYN and XOGSkin, from the 2023 and 2022 classes respectively, further underscores the program's value in providing the tools for market refinement and brand expansion. This track record is a powerful signal to the industry that investing in diverse talent yields tangible returns and enriches the entire fashion ecosystem. The program operates under the broader Informa Markets Fashion for Change (IMFC) initiative, reinforcing that this is not an isolated project but part of a long-term corporate commitment to fostering a more equitable industry.
