Jameel McDaniel, a chemistry student, was named a recipient of the SBB Research Group Foundation's $2,500 STEM scholarship, an award designed to support the next generation of innovators.

The SBB Research Group Foundation scholarship acknowledges his deep engagement, which includes sophisticated molecular biological research conducted at the University of California, Berkeley. There, he worked in the lab of Dr. James Nuñez, an assistant professor whose work is at the cutting edge of genome engineering and epigenetic editing. The foundation's stated goal is to support "ambitious organizations solving unmet needs with thoughtful, long-term strategies."

While the STEM scholarship is a flagship educational initiative, the foundation's impact is far broader. It operates a monthly grant program that awards $5,000 to a selected nonprofit, with finalists receiving $1,000. This program, which grew out of a COVID-19 relief effort, has provided vital funding to a diverse array of organizations. In the past year alone, the foundation made 55 grants, supporting over 63 charitable organizations to date.

By providing financial resources and, just as importantly, public recognition, these programs help alleviate the financial burden that can be a major barrier while also validating students' ambitions and affirming their place within the scientific community.
