Reviving History: Century-Old Richmond School Reopens Top Floor to Educate Future Innovators

RICHMOND, VA – May 01, 2026 – After nearly two decades of silence, the top floor of the Patrick Henry School of Science and Arts (PHSSA) is once again filled with the sounds of learning. The school, Virginia's first-ever charter elementary, celebrated the culmination of a decade-long renovation project today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially reopening a space that had been closed since 2007.

The ambitious restoration of the nearly 100-year-old building on Semmes Avenue marks a new chapter for the school and the community it serves. Supported by the national nonprofit Building Hope, the project transforms the historic top floor into a modern hub for third, fourth, and fifth-grade students, directly supporting PHSSA's acclaimed mission to integrate environmental science and the arts.

The space, which had been inoperable since the building last functioned as a traditional public school, now features a state-of-the-art "Learning Lab." The project was financially supported by several philanthropic organizations, including the Red Gates Foundation, The Pauley Family Foundation, the Marty Morton Parsons Foundation, and the Farrell Family Foundation.

At the center of the partnership was Building Hope, a national nonprofit dedicated to eliminating facility-related barriers for charter schools. With a 22-year history and over $2 billion in supported projects, Building Hope provides crucial financing, real estate development, and operational services that allow schools like PHSSA to thrive and expand.
