Hangzhou is moving beyond its ancient roots, showcasing modern industrial might in a landmark Paris event to forge deeper economic and cultural ties with Europe.
Hangzhou's New Global Story: Blending Industry and Culture in Paris
PARIS, France – July 31, 2026 – On the banks of the Seine, thousands of miles from China’s ancient Grand Canal, a new kind of dialogue is taking shape. The Hangzhou Promotion Event, held recently in the French capital, signaled a strategic evolution in how the Chinese metropolis presents itself to the world, moving beyond its celebrated history to tell a compelling story of modern industry, technological innovation, and global synergy.
Co-hosted by the Hangzhou International Communication Center (HZICC) and the Linping District International Communication Center, the event operated under the theme "Civilization Dialogue: From Cultural Heritage to Industry Narrative." It presented a multifaceted Hangzhou—a city that not only preserves its 5,000-year-old legacy but also boldly pioneers the future of global commerce and technology.
A New Chapter in Global Storytelling
This event marks a deliberate pivot in Hangzhou's international outreach. Following a 2025 Mediterranean tour that focused on the city's role as a cradle of ancient civilization, the focus has now shifted to forging concrete industrial ties. "Hangzhou is turning its industrial strengths, innovation vitality and city stories into a global narrative that can be felt, understood and shared," explained Ji Tao, operation director of the HZICC.
This “industrial storytelling” is more than a marketing slogan; it represents a sophisticated city-branding strategy increasingly adopted by major Chinese urban centers. By integrating its economic prowess with its rich cultural identity, Hangzhou aims to build deeper, more resilient partnerships that transcend traditional trade. The Paris dialogue serves as a prime example of this model in action, creating a platform where business leaders and cultural ambassadors can find common ground and explore mutual opportunities. It's a recognition that in today's interconnected world, economic relationships are strengthened by shared cultural understanding.
The Digital and Physical Silk Road
The industrial narrative was brought to life by the corporate powerhouses that call Hangzhou home. A roundtable on industrial synergy revealed how these companies are not just entering the European market but actively reshaping it. Cainiao Global Supply Chain, the logistics arm of Alibaba, detailed its ambitious efforts to slash delivery times between China and France to an astonishing three days. This goal is supported by a massive investment in European infrastructure, including a major e-Hub in Liège, Belgium, as part of a long-term vision for 72-hour global delivery. For French consumers, this translates into a faster, more reliable e-commerce experience.
Simultaneously, e-commerce giant AliExpress highlighted its growing localization capabilities. The company is proactively adapting to the European landscape by launching its "Local+" fulfillment service, which includes a network of warehouses across the continent. This strategic move is a direct response to evolving EU tax reforms and import regulations, which incentivize local operations. By building a robust local presence, AliExpress can offer faster shipping and streamlined returns, positioning itself to compete directly with established European and American e-commerce platforms. This demonstrates a nuanced understanding of the market, moving from a cross-border model to a deeply integrated one.
From Powersports to High Fashion: A Showcase of Innovation
The breadth of Hangzhou's industrial might was on full display. CFMOTO, a leading Chinese powersports brand, described how it is leapfrogging global competitors through relentless innovation and savvy branding. The company has already become the best-selling UTV/ATV brand in Europe by market share, challenging legacy Japanese and European manufacturers. Its success is built on a foundation of advanced R&D, integrating technologies like AI-trained Terrain Intelligence into its vehicles. With a growing network of dealerships and a clear ambition to become a premium global brand, CFMOTO exemplifies the technological prowess driving Hangzhou's industrial sector.
From heavy machinery to high fashion, the story of innovation continued with E-Fashion Town. Located in Hangzhou’s Linping district, this hub has transformed from farmland into a global fashion center in just a decade, housing over 5,800 enterprises. It leverages cutting-edge technology, including artificial intelligence and 3D digital design, to revolutionize its production chain. The event highlighted a decade-long collaboration with the prestigious Institut Français de la Mode in Paris, a partnership that underscores the deep and ongoing exchange of creativity and expertise between the two cities.
Culture as the Common Language
While industry took center stage, the dialogue was firmly rooted in cultural exchange. Charles-Emmanuel Dewees, founder of the NICE Cultural Exchange Platform, captured the event's spirit perfectly. "Can web novels become a shared language? Absolutely," he stated. "When language isn't a barrier, what touches your heart is the common language."
This sentiment was palpable at the Hangzhou exhibition booth outside the conference hall. French visitors marveled at intricate mortise-and-tenon building block models—a tribute to ancient Chinese architecture—and elegant celadon tea ware. For French visitor Hugo Nicoli, who had previously enjoyed tea on Hangzhou's famous West Lake, the exhibit was a powerful reminder of his travels. He noted that the exquisite porcelain and architectural miniatures made him eager to plan a return trip with his family, demonstrating how cultural artifacts can spark personal connections and inspire future engagement.
The event was just the beginning of a deeper story. The HZICC team extended its stay in Paris for four days, filming at key industrial and cultural sites. Their cameras captured product selections at a Tmall Global office, the high-speed sorting of parcels at a Cainiao warehouse, test drives at a CFMOTO store, and a fashion experience at the MEILLEUR MOMENT boutique. These stories, gathered along the Seine, are now being carried back to the Grand Canal, weaving a new chapter in the shared history of two great cities.
Between these two iconic waterways, the dialogue continues, proving that the distance is never so great as it seems.
